hey, i did a full fresh install of windows after a format, installed everything super-duper, only when i ran 3DMark2K1 is says in the system information that i have directX 8.0 running, and when i submitted my result it also said i have 8.0.

now when i run dxdiag.exe is clearly says i have directX8.1, is there any way to tell which one i am DEFINETLY using?

also is there any differences?

I think it displays the major version... but I could be wrong. I'd trust dxdiag because thats more of a detail analysis of the directx than the 3dmark is... could it be that 3dmark is confused?

well that's the weirdest thing, i am using windows XP, it does show in dxdiag.exe that it is 8.1 but like i said, in 3DMark2K1 it shows 8.0

does this happen in everyones computer? or is it just mine that it shows 8.0 in 3dmark?

 What gfx card are you packing. There's VERY little diff between DX8.0 and DX8.1, certainly nothing you'd notice. However GF3 and GF4TI cards are DX8.0 compliant while Rad8500/9000 are DX8.1 compliant, if you're using a DX8.0 compliant card that could be what 3Dmark is reporting.

:) I checked and my WinXP DX8.1 GF4TI4200 shows up in 3Dmark as DX8.0, I'd say that's it.

oh wow, thanks anandaustin, you're right, using a geforce 4 TU4200, i forgot about the actual card being compliant with directX 8.1!

thanks for clearing that up for me, incidently when i installed the newest version of directX it made me lose quite a few points on 3Dmark, around 1000 marks, do you think this is due to what the microsoft website said about not installing it unless you have the windowsXP service pack installed first? i didn't think it would make a difference but perhaps it has?

i still have my old version of directX so if i just install that then will it overwrite the new version i installed?

it doesn't seem like you can un-install directX from control panel

Well for one, it doesn't really make a difference what 3DMark thinks. But more importantly, it doesn't matter what any program thinks, because your card isn't compliant with the updates in 8.1. So don't worry about it.
