Why does it cost so much to register an Icelandic domain name?

I was looking it up for the hell of it, and it seems like most places charge at least $500/year to register a .is domain name. why?

Your order must be shipped in by Viking slave rowers who are fueled by cod and seal blood. Blame the hippies protesting the seal hunt in Newfoundland.

"is" is a word in English that could be used to construct novelty domains in the spirit of del.icio.us:

joe.is/awesome

bob.is/dumb

And they may have seen the potential for profit. ccTLDs tend to be expensive to register anyway.

My favorite is www.chewbac.ca

Good for them. I see tons of spam with just random letter domain names since the spammer's real domain has been banned by filters long ago. Domains should be very expensive and not allow a tasting option.

some TLDs are just more expensive, for whatever reason. I still want a .su one... wonder if they'll ever phase that out? 😀

Yep according to ICANN only icelandic companies can register a .is domain for you. Looks like they are probably colluding to keep the price artificially high. Their prerogative I suppose although I think they are missing some great opportunities to maximise their sales by following such a policy.
