Why does In-n-Out ask if you want onions on your burger?

In-n-Out always asks if you want onions with your burger. If you do, they ask if you want raw or grilled onions. It all seems very tedious. Why can't they just decide if they come with onions or not standard and leave it up to the customer to specify if they want to deviate?

Onions are polarizing.
Customers rarely check what actually come on a sandwich/burger, and get mad when there are onions on it when they didn't expect them. Onions are not something you can just take off and not leave a taste, so they demand another burger.
It's easier to just ask.

I only like onions if they are cooked, raw is meh. Caramelized with some kind of wine sauce is the way to go tho.

Some people hate onions. I guess they figure it is better to ask the customer rather than just put them on and risk a complaint.

I love the double double with grilled onions.

this is why.

Honestly, I think they should be standard, b/c onions are awesome on burgers. I get that kids, of course, will hate them. But if you're an adult, you should learn--or be learned--how to eat a burger, damn it!

"CZRoe: I went through the drive-thru at In-n-Out today and ordered 2 burgers, fries and a shake. By the time I got on the highway after waiting forever for them to make my food (I mean really, how hard can it be to throw this frozen stuff in the microwave?), I found they had put ONIONS on my burgers! WTF??! Who puts onions on without asking? How the hell am I supposed to pick these nice thick slabs of onion off without getting sauce on my pants or the seat? And then there was this thick permeating scent of onion with every bite! ARGHHGHGHGHG!"

onions are only going to piss people off if they're chopped and cooked. i have no problem chucking a few raw rings of onion.

but this is why 'plain' has been a staple order of places like mcdonalds, since they just put (iirc) ketchup, mustard, and onions on their regular burgers. but they're those disgusting little minced onions that make everything they touch taste like ass.

although for some reason mcdonalds has now replaced 'plain' with 'cheese only,' apparently since some retard has been bitching that his 'plain cheeseburger' has cheese on it.

This. When I became an adult, I started eating onions, tomatoes & fish, which I didn't like as a kid. The only thing I haven't gotten over is coconut. I like its milk in curry, but I hate the texture in dessert.

So then make the standard form without onions and have those who want onions specifically ask for them.

FWIW, I love fresh ("raw") onions. The crisp, cold, tart adds a lot. That said, cooked onions may add a bit of oily flavor but they lose the onion flavor and become mostly flavorless, so I don't understand why so many people prefer it.

I think it should be the other way

If I have to fucking ask for them to remove fucking goddamn Mayo or worthless ketchup (as you assume, at every burger joint, that one or both of these will be included), why should onions be an implied request?

the latter belongs on a burger, while the former two do not.

Why do most fast food places ask if you want a drink? If I wanted a drink I would fucking order one.

High margin items. Sales tactic.

it's what, pennies per drink of cost to the restaurant, and they charge you ~$1-2.

...now imagine what the theater is making off of those beverages (granted, it is the main source of their revenue. ticket sales at theaters are what, 2% profit for a theater?)

I'm exactly the opposite. I love raw onions, hate it when they are carmelized. They lose so much flavor when cooked, I like the raw, in your face flavor.

But then again, they gain more sweetness being cooked properly. I enjoy them both ways though.

I love onions, raw or cooked. And there are so many different levels of cooked onions.

The onion is god's proof of love.

Anybody who can rub two brain cells together can order first off exactly what they want. I tell In and Out how I want my burger so they never have to ask. Think instead of whining.

I went to the new one in Dallas and specifically asked to have no onion. Got my order and it still had onions - as if their menu was really complicated. But the bigger question is that I ate the burger and it was meh (after removing the onions). What's the big deal with In-in-Out burgers??? I'm not going back.

I know onions will cause my dad to throw away a burger. He grew up poor and the cooked everything with onions.
