Why does In-n-Out ask if you want onions on your burger?

In-n-Out always asks if you want onions with your burger. If you do, they ask if you want raw or grilled onions. It all seems very tedious. Why can't they just decide if they come with onions or not standard and leave it up to the customer to specify if they want to deviate?

Honestly, I think they should be standard, b/c onions are awesome on burgers. I get that kids, of course, will hate them. But if you're an adult, you should learn--or be learned--how to eat a burger, damn it!

onions are only going to piss people off if they're chopped and cooked. i have no problem chucking a few raw rings of onion.

but this is why 'plain' has been a staple order of places like mcdonalds, since they just put (iirc) ketchup, mustard, and onions on their regular burgers. but they're those disgusting little minced onions that make everything they touch taste like ass.

although for some reason mcdonalds has now replaced 'plain' with 'cheese only,' apparently since some retard has been bitching that his 'plain cheeseburger' has cheese on it.

This. When I became an adult, I started eating onions, tomatoes & fish, which I didn't like as a kid. The only thing I haven't gotten over is coconut. I like its milk in curry, but I hate the texture in dessert.

FWIW, I love fresh ("raw") onions. The crisp, cold, tart adds a lot. That said, cooked onions may add a bit of oily flavor but they lose the onion flavor and become mostly flavorless, so I don't understand why so many people prefer it.

If I have to fucking ask for them to remove fucking goddamn Mayo or worthless ketchup (as you assume, at every burger joint, that one or both of these will be included), why should onions be an implied request?

the latter belongs on a burger, while the former two do not.

it's what, pennies per drink of cost to the restaurant, and they charge you ~$1-2.


...now imagine what the theater is making off of those beverages (granted, it is the main source of their revenue. ticket sales at theaters are what, 2% profit for a theater?)

I'm exactly the opposite. I love raw onions, hate it when they are carmelized. They lose so much flavor when cooked, I like the raw, in your face flavor.

I went to the new one in Dallas and specifically asked to have no onion. Got my order and it still had onions - as if their menu was really complicated. But the bigger question is that I ate the burger and it was meh (after removing the onions). What's the big deal with In-in-Out burgers??? I'm not going back.
