I would stick to ICQ99b. From what I've heard 2000 sucks, I never have downloaded it since I knew it was bloated as hell.

ICQ works for me... It sure does use a lot of resources and once in a while crasche, but there is a lot really a lot that is positve to say about it...

I use ICQ 2000 just because of the SMS feature,,, this is awesome... they allow you to type 160 letters and no ads.

But something that is great is that you can search for ppl... And this is a great feature,,, lets say you want to write a paper on Paris... what do I do, I go to my computer open ICQ and hit the white pages button... typ paris and hit search for online users only, and there I am right in the middle of paris... this is the good thing about ICQ... ICQ is great,,, only function that are missing ins the pc to phone possibility and fax...

But i am sure icq is working on those issues...

Let me know if there is something you prefer over those features...

MSN works for me for calling or dialpad.com

ok ICQ is wearth the tradeoff in my case... I haven't seen anything that comes close to it...

What are you talking about? There's never been any ads in ICQ (that I've seen anyway....but I'm still using 99b, not bloated 2000), and what was your point about 160 letters? ICQ allows messages of 450 chars (in 99a and higher). I think you're confused....at least you weren't at all clear.

I opened up ICQ the other day and every msg I sent had an AD attached to the bottom... made msg windows really big :( I am not sure if I need to upgrade versions or what. I am using some variation of 2000, I think. I wish ICQ would ditch half its features. Another thing that annoys me is, in msgs, the other persons' text is always italicized. Anyone else have this or know a way to disable it.

AIM and ICQ both have good features and if they could combine they would be the ultimate chat program (aside from IRC). I really prefer AIM's chat windows to ICQ's. Plus AIM has implemented sending/direct link pretty well.

You can configger ICQ 2000 settings you know! You don't have to have to endure all the extra crap. You can make it look very simple and clean (better than 99?).

Nop I think you got me wrong...

SMS (Short Message System) is a way to sent messages to cell phones...

It may not be a comon feature in America, but it is here in Germany... So SMS is a nice way to sent messages to cellphones that support it... I don't know any of the newer ones (last 2years) that don't support SMS...

Then there's also the option of going to an ICQ clones, such as Miranda ICQ it's an open source clone of the ICQ, that uses few resouces, but at the same doesn't have ALL the functions of ICQ.

True that is cool... and ppl can sent you messages from their cell phone to your icq account... I don't have a cellphone because I don't need one yet, but a lot of ppl have one in Ger, so what could be easier???

But how about those configgerations??? Auric your turn... let me know please...

Another thing that is nice too, but uses more resources again is ICQ +... which allows you to have scins and you can create your own ones...

Hrmm, been using ICQ since about the beginning. I never get spammed. (well, once a year maybe) and I have the newest version, no ADs, lockups, no freezes, nothing. Hrmm, oh well.

And it only uses about 4-6mb of ram depending on how many messages and crap.. ah well, no complaints here, still runs like a charm.

I will be removing Win ME and installing Win 2000 Pro on my P3/866 soon. So far the only new feature in ICQ 2000b that I like is the save chat, does ICQ99b have that? Does anyone here have ICQ99b running on their W2k rig? Is it stable?

<<I can say for myself and all my friends, we all use ICQ 99b and haven't had any resource hogging, or crashing EVER.>>

I havent had any of those problems you described with 2000a, 2000b and all of its different builds.

<<AOL owns ICQ. I mean that literally.>>

Yea like thats news to me. I still dont give a rat ass to AOL's "main guy" AIM.

ICQ can be wierd sometimes. Several times I have sent and recieved files at sustained speeds of up to 10k/s on my 56k to another 56k. I don't see how that is possible but it was sure cool. And it wasn't just on small files.

Lxi,
to be fair if you have never had any problems with 2000 then u are very lucky indeed :)
Everybody I know with ICQ whines about it :(
There is not really much to do apart from download/install the program and then run it - maybe the source sites are corrupted or something?

Coincidentally I have noticed that ICQ reacts differently when using a moden connection vs my normal 1.5mbps connection - strangely it is often faster with the 56K???

I think there may be a conflict with ICQ and the Enternet 300 connection program. There is no problem with my connection but I get a 99% failure to start 2000b first time - need to ctr-alt-del - then often the program will launch rather than close.

I did not have problems with ICQ before I had broadband internet - any PC gurus out there able to check out my possible theory on the internet connection method conflict? - which I believe is causing the problem!
