Why does http://www.x.com take you to http://www.paypal.com ?

I was in the process of writing a program, and made it read a URL and spit out its HTML. I just randomly typed in http://www.x.com and I noticed the code said PayPal and stuff in it. So I put it in my browser...and sure enough, went to PayPal.

Odd to have a domain like that direct you to PayPal, isn't it?

Why X of all letters? I'd figure they'd take domains that sound close to paypal, but isn't really...but I guess X is for people like me...who just type it in randomly.

X.com is (well, "was" now that eBay bought it, I guess) PayPal's parent company.

Yep, X.com gave you $50 when you opened an account for a while, and I think an additional $5 for each person you referred. It was nice for a short time :)

Bit of history posted 12/6/2000

"Though X.com's exit from the Internet banking stage is welcome (and something that should be considered by the rest of the Internet-only institutions), we are not rid of the genius who inspired the pitiful situation in the first place. Internet bankers will be tainted as disgruntled X.com customers retell their experiences with Mr. Musk's organization.

Unfortunately, PayPal also survives. Its customers are apparently willing to let a privately insured, unregulated company - untested by crisis - hold and move their money."

Whenever I use Paypal, I always type in x.com rather than paypal.com. I don't need any typos sending me to someone else's cleverly disguised website.

I think, at least at one point, paypal recommended that, for that reason.
