Why does Gmail space keep going up?

When I signed up for gmail it was at around 2GB, now it's up to 2.7GB and everyday it goes up slowly. Any reason for this?

Marketing. When google started giving the huge limits so did a bunch of other people. In order to avoid playing a leapfrog game they just put the counter in so it was constantly increasing.

so wait a second, there's a little man constantly adding new hard drives at google's server farm? i'm glad i dont have that guy's job

Actually, it turns out Google is just a spyware program from the 90's that's run off of millions of unsecured computers in old people's homes.

When they increased the storage limit from 1GB to 2GB on 04/01/05, they also said that they were going to gradually increase it by about a Gig a year from that point onward.

I can only imagine the size of the SAN that they would need in order to store that much mail.

Exactly. And I bet the average user has 1GB or less full, so they can quote 2.7GB and rising per person. I doubt they have that much server space dedicated. Overstated.

not drives - he adds them a platter at a time so that they increase by small but constant increments

but it's no where near full. I have all my personal email and it's taking up about 70MB... hahaha.. that's about 2yrs worth. then again, most of it is order confirmations.

I got about 200 MB in my GMail inbox right now. Assuming that most people have half of that, they would be up to 500 Terabytes of storage used if they had 5 million active accounts right now.
