Why does everything refer to the $299 eee PC?

$299 EEE is coming out late November (so very soon) last I heard. Same as the $400 model I believe except 2GB SSD and 256MB RAM.

EDIT: Forgot it will have a lower capacity battery as well, 4.4mAh vs. 5.2mAh for the 4G EEE.

EDIT 2: Also, the OLPC is $200. You're thinking of the buy-one-give-one deal they have going on now. For $400 you get an OLPC for yourself and one is sent to a child in a developing country.

I thought the buy-one-give-one was the only way to get one currently?

As far as I know it's the only (legal) way to get one now and ever. :p I just thought your post was inaccurate -- the OLPC isn't a $400 laptop, that's what a person in a developed country has to pay to get one through their special promotion.

If you have any questions about the eee, let me know. It's surprisingly powerful, especially using the installed linux distro. I'm using one connected over my cell phone as USB modem now.

I was curious if it supported tethering. Just curious, what brand of phone are you using and who is your service provider? Have you heard if dialup will work with Motorola RAZR phones on Alltel?

That's one of the things I really liked about the Nokia internet tablets, pairing it with a phone and getting dialup working was very painless. I wouldn't mind having to use a cable since the EEE doesn't have Bluetooth, I was just hoping dialup was easy to set up.

There's still a lot of references about a $199 EEE PC as well. Asus flat out lied about the pricing to make hype, then launched with more normal prices.

It was $199, then $249...then $299...

After my A8Js, I doubt I can ever buy another Asus product. I used to be a loyal Asus lover.

Well to be fair, I'm pretty sure ASUS never officially stated there was going to be a $200 model available in the US. From what I understand availability of the $200 EEE is similar to the OLPC, i.e. only to developing nations in bulk orders. I think what happened was news of a $200 EEE was leaked and sites started reporting that ASUS was releasing a $200 laptop when they didn't have the full story.

I meant a press release or something official like that. The review is probably basing that $200 price on what they had read on news sites, I doubt they were in contact with ASUS. Notice they also mentioned $250 for the 8GB version, surely if they had been in contact with ASUS they would have been informed that there were not going to be any 8GB units at that price point.

I think a lot of it was people buying into the hype as well, when I first read the news stories I wanted to believe, but I think we all knew that 8GB+ at such a low price just wasn't possible. Because of this I didn't buy into the hype and didn't set myself up for disappointment. If you did I think you only have yourself to blame.
