With 128 mb pc133 generic cas3 sticks going for $75 shipped on pricewatch, that will work on everyboard even a kt133, why would anyone be insane enough to pay $170 shipped for a muskin cas2 one or something. You wont even notice the difference, and well.. if you really have that much money can i have some?

Higher bus speeds for OCing. I can't justify it either, but I'm sure thats part of the reasoning behind it.

Heck, you don't even need PC133 since all the AMD mobo are on PC100 FSBs... but does all generic pc133 work on a AMD board ? not all, thats why but yeah, I wouldn't pay 170 for stick, maybe 100 if the price is 75 for something that's tested

If you can run your CPU at an FSB above 133Mhz you will see performance gains. For me I could run my duron 600 at 9.5 * 100FSB, but its faster to run it at 9 * 112Mhz. Not only do I get highers scores on my CPU benchmark, I also get higher scores on the memory. All this and no crashes.

PC133 CAS2 memory is the best for reaching higher bus speeds. Thus the cost increase.

112MHz? big deal!! So do you think that 128 meg of PC133 CAS2 is gonna outperform a stick of 256 meg PC100? Of course not. Those Premium Mushkin chips were meant to be for PIII overclocking where you'd need to go as high as 150MHz FSB, but people running on VIA chipset mobo don't need to pay for those premium prices. And BTW most PC100 will overclock to 112 just fine. SOmething is very wrong with your math 9x112=1008.

Because it works.

And if you doubt me look at the benchmarks between cas2 and cas3.

Running at cas2 will give you more of a performance boost than overclocking your processor.

And try running at 140fsb at cas 2 with generic sticks. It won't happen. You pay for quality and performance.

Well, when I bought my Mushkin it was only a few dollars more than the generic. That's why I got it. If I was buying now, I'd get the generic PC133.

i still dont get it, i mean the difference between CAS 2 and CAS3 at 133mhz is one cycle. its like 9% improvement on you memory speed. I mean so what if you are gonna run 140mhz cas2, most generic can run 140 cas3, and its still just 1 single 7 ns cycle, and you save like $200 that you could be giving to me.

I was reading this "old" post and had a question...
Planning on building a moderately overclocked duron/abit KT7 system and was wondering is "the good stuff" required? I'm talking about Corsair PC-133 CAS2, 128 megs for $130. Corsair has their value line which is PC-133 CAS3 at $70 for 128 megs. Does it matter for my system? Duron FSB is 100 and I'm probably looking to overclock by multiplier. I don't care about the speed of the memory as you guys mentioned it was only 15% faster? I mean I can get 256 megs for $140 instead of 128 for $130.

forcesho: AMD mobos don't run PC133mhz ram!?!? DAMNIT... I just bought a stick from Accessmicro... it'll drop down to PC100 right? So it'll still work am I right? Damn, I could have saved money and bought PC100? ARGHHH... And I might have gone with some Crucial too! only around 30 bucks more... Dang it...

Well My Duron system runs it's memory at 140Mhz, 2,2,2 And it could go even higher (if my Mobo would)
So yeah for some of us it's worth the few extra dollars (and only a few)
You have to either be insane, or rich and insane to be paying $200 for 128mb of any ram. You can get PC-150 ram that will do 160+ 2,2,2 for $90.

So dcdomain, It depends on what motherboard you have, and what chipset that MB uses.

And you can overclock generic ram to cas 2, i have done it with mine and it is stable. Not saying that all ram oc is stable, but you can also get pc133 generic ram and run it at pc100 cas2 easily. Saying that cas2 ram does more than overclocking is a little hard to believe. I have oc my cpu by almost 300 mhz and oc my ram, and i can tell you which one i have seen the biggest impact. Pc 100 or pc133 for 128mb generic cost right about 45 bucks now, while the cas 2 ram is still around 120 or more for name brand. The speed boost does not reflect on the cost. I can get a pc133 128 and pc133 of 256 generic ram for the price of corsair or other brands such as that.

And I have seen ram sold as generic crosse reference to be ibm made.

>I agree....Same thing goes. Why drive a Viper when a K-car will do just fine. Hope the K-car doesn't break down at high speeds :)

So what would be the best memory (price vs. performance)for the system I'm building? MSI PRO2, 700mhz Duron? Not a big OCer but the board will auto OC.
