why does everyone say they're waiting for starcraft2 or diablo3 before upgrading/building?

friends i've talked to, posts i've read online, everyone makes it sound like it's going to be a very hardware intensive game. but i just don't see it that way.
has blizzard released hardware requirements or something that i don't nkow about?

even with hundreds of units on screen, i don't think it will be that taxing.
my q9550 oc'd to 3.4ghz and gtx 260 should be more than fine imo.

I have never, ever seen a single post or heard a single person or OF a single person who is waiting to upgrade for either of those games. NO ONE.

I've seen these posts. Because a Pentium 3 will play Starcraft and Diablo 2, and not starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. Those may be the only games they play.

Why waste $1K on a system now when you can get the same build for $200 cheaper when you actually need it?

What's it to you? Feel the need to brag about your hardware? People have their reasoning and its a very valid reason.

Well why build a brand new rig now when its not needed, might as well wait for SCII or whatever game you are really anticipating because better tech might be out by then or current tech will be cheaper.

Its not always about the game being taxing. My 8600m GT might be alright with SCII considering their minimum is an ATI 9700 PRO. But im not getting a new comp now because i dont need it, maybe for starcraft II if this thing cant run it on max.

edit: nvm i basically just repeated what Scholzpdx said lol.

These people must be fairly uninformed. Blizzard makes their games playable on the lowest common denominator of hardware.

If that's the only games they want and their computer is fairly old then I don't see why not.

Even though Bliz makes games playable on low end systems, this comes at the cost of lowering graphic settings. I've got this illness where I like the settings to be cranked (or near max) and still want a nice FPS.

I am not ashamed to admit my next big full upgrade (i.e. mobo, CPU, memory & GPU) is pending Diablo 3. Why? Diablo 1 & 2 are among my favorite games evar, I don't want to buy newer components now, only to find they were not sufficient later and upgrade again before I need to.

That said, the last game I upgraded for was Age of Conan. Given its condition at release, this was proven to have been a bad idea. I am confident Blizzard will not release something in a similar state.

Everyone knows the games aren't going to be awesome graphically so no need to upgrade. The most I might do is go Quad since I'm going to need it for all the units on screen.

I haven't see anyone say it either, but for arguments sake, lets say that people are waiting. It is probably because they are not interested in any other PC games right now and their computers/laptops currently are too low spec to run the games with everything on. In that case, why not wait to buy the horsepower until you know you are actually going to use some of it? You get the most bang for the buck even if SC2 doesn't use that much bang.

If you read the forums for those games, there will be people asking for hardware advice and only a handful of people on those forums can tell the difference between a Radeon 4870 and a Geforce GTX 275. Asking for hardware upgrade advice at the WoW, EQ2, or NWN2 forums is pointless.

Because we have no idea when they will really be released. If you buy parts now, they can be antiquated by the time they get released. I did that when waiting for HL2...I was quite pissed. Only buy new hardware when you have a game that requires the upgrade otherwise it's a waste of money.

You are very wrong. There are plenty of people who are waiting for these games to upgrade their system. The reasons for this are ignorance and stupidity. There is this "mentality" that it's best to be absolutely 100% sure that my system will run SCII or DIII. People think that the only way to be sure is to upgrade AFTER these games come out.

On top of all this, there are fanboys who think that every time Blizzard games come out they create new standards by which the power of a PC can/should be measured. According to these folks, if a PC can run every Blizzard game, it will run everything.

Ridiculous, I know... But most of these people are around 14 years old, give or take.

No I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen. Who bases benchmarks on Blizzard games? No one does. It isn't "if a PC can run every Blizzard game, it will run everything." It's "any computer can run any Blizzard game because they're coded to run on fricken' 386's."

Either that, or they could just want to upgrade, however, since the next game they'll truly play to death would be D3 or SC2, it makes sense to wait until they are released to get the best system for the money.

They're generally the same people who think you need to spend 2k to buy a PC that plays Crysis. They're last purchase was probably several thousand on a "gaming" laptop from Dell loaded with a 8600gt.

My gaming rig is old.

I'm waiting for SC2 and D3 before upgrading because:
1. I can play most games I want to right now.
2. I certainly won't be able to play the "dynamic duo" with most of the eye candy turned on with my current rig.
3. I'm too cheap to upgrade just for the heck of it.

What can I say? Money's tight, and I need a compelling reason before I build a new PC.

Blizzard is making SC2 for Korea, so you know it's going to run pretty much integrated graphics.

Diablo 3 will run on pretty modest hardware too I bet.

A friend at work says he is going to build a new computer for when Diablo 3 is released. Not an upgrade, but pretty similar :p

ha, I know someone who has a computer like that. $2000 laptop with a dual core AMD processor and I think it was something like a Radeon 3700. Even better is that it's a "Ferrari Edition" and it has a little Ferrari logo. It's a great computer, but it's still a bit silly. It makes me think I should look for a new car that has a little Intel logo on it and says "Intel Edition"

requirements recommended will be:

Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz +
1gb Windows XP or 2gb Vista/7
8800GT or equivalent

And this should get you 1680x1050 with pretty much all the eye candy on maxed.

And I am basically speaking outta my ass but you shouldn't expect much more than this for a blizzard game :)

People want to upgrade for this because they know they'll probably spend 99.9% of their time with these games and not others so they want it to be the best experience available. A while back there was some speculation that AMD, Blizzard and Havok have done a deal for the Physics in these games so that spurred on much speculation that it may be GPU based physics or that you'd need a new card to see some fancy effects but we haven't heard much on that for a while.
