I told like 5 people i know i was thinking of switching to nextel, b/c ATT is really giving me problems. And everyone says i'll regret it, they suck, etc. and none of them have it. All my friends that have it now said they love it and have no complaints.

Whats the real deal behind nextel?

ANY fast food place at lunchtime will give you the answer.

Seriously though, I haven't heard anything but praise for Nextel around here. Northern Virginia

yeah, those people are just uninformed...ignorance is not an excuse for stupidity, remember. I'm with T-Mobile, but I know that Nextel is definitely nice, just expensive for the college student, unless you know a lot of people that also have it, therefore being able to utilize the walkie-talkie feature. for instance, a lot of the black people on campus use Nextel...now that's just smart. You can get the most basic plan with the WT feature, and you don't even need a landline phone.

Just make sure it fits you best, and you'll be fine.

The thing that bugs me is that people are always 2-waying at the loudest possible setting, so I walk around campus and all I hear is "BEEP...*talk*...BEEP"

...true... thats why they need more phones like that... because in all my classes last semester... i swear that half of the class had one...

I think the major drawback is that ALL your friends must have unlimited Direct Connect, or else you're just wasting your money. It's just a regular phone with a regular service plan and somewhat crappy coverage unless ALL your friends have walkie-talkie phones (i.e. Nextel). That's why people fear it.

I got it and love it.
They may look like crap, but they're built like bricks. You can drop them off a rooftop, pick it up and continue your conversation. Try doing that with any Verizon (etc.) phone.

cant stand the beeps. **boop beep boop!** uhm, yes, honey, can you pick me up some hemorroid cream, extra smooth please, i cant even sit down! **boop beep boop!** man, i dont wanna hear that crap. if walkie talkie is the way to go though... keep in mind sprint and verizon are both mere weeks away from unveiling their walkie talkie capabilites (verizon: push to talk [PTT], sprint: Rapid [or Ready] Talk I believe.) iunno, if it suits you and your finacial needs, i say who cares what other people think and go for it.

What does that have to do with Nextel? Are you a racist or something?

They are DEFINITELY stronger than a lot of other phones however.

Most of the people that I know that have a beef with Nextel have more of a complaint when it comes to "cell phone manners". For instance, people hate the "beep beep" out at restaurants and the loud talking into the phone and so on. What people don't know is how to do a walkie-talkie conversation with the flip up and the speaker muted. The internal earpiece speaker still works and what you have is a more private discussion.

Nextel is great in my area as well and I have been a subscriber for over 2 years. I just signed another 1 year contract and I couldn't be happier. :)

Nextel plans tend to be a bit pricey... but the service and coverage and everything is pretty damn good.

many (most) of my friends have nextel (cept me, no cell) and they like it a lot. the signal is great in city/metro areas, but they seem to cut out completely when traveling long distances on the interstate. one friend travels between springfield MO and KC MO frequently, a 4 hour drive, and once he gets more than 40 mins from either city on the interstate he gets no service whatsoever. another friend goes to school in DC and he said the coverage couldnt be better.

the service is a bit expensive, and i can see how it would be hard to justify unless you had quite a few friends already on nextel

Even though I live in a major city the service is always dropping.

I don't know about that. My friend had an I60, dropped it out of a car a few times and it eventually snapped in half. My other friend, however, with his Samsung, has probably thrown his phone 5+ feet a few times with only a few scratches here and there.

you should really ask people in your area about coverage... in my area (sgf mo), nextel is great, att is great, sprint not so great, cingular sucks.

I have Nextel in NYC and it works very well. It works almost everywhere, which is more than I can say for Sprint, which I had before. Another reason why I switched was because I have big hands and the asian phones were too small. I have the i95c and it rocks. Big, sturdy, with a lot of features. The Direct Connect feature was the icing on the cake.

jesus. okay, back to good mood.

A friend of mine used to cellphone service and he said Nextel was only worth it because of the DirectConnect. He did have a Nextel phone for himself though...
