All I play are fps style games and this one has a hold on me. Hell I can't even play it till my gf is here watching me play and telling me where to go ;p It's kinda fun having these creatures jump out at the both of us crawling through this huge place. No cars no lean its ok with me.

I remember how doom was when I was a kid and I never thought it a scary game until now. Is it some ground breaking fps? No. But is FarCry? No. Call of Duty? No. Its just a well written well played game that if you take your time to go through its hella enjoyable.

Or maybe I just like the fact that my tiny asian gf sits on my lap while I play it :D

The point is people make comments about how lack luster doom3 is and that I think that it isn't a bad game at all.

2xAA ia not "default" . . . rather 0xAA/8xAF is for for HiQ

the resolution is also important in determining FPS. (10x7?) ;)

Nice "try" at a rescue ;)

:D

still wrong "place" and you are late to the "party"

800x600.

I will say that I started playing with 512mb of ram and got some stutters when they added 3d models to the map and I knew that a monster was there so I added another 512mb of ram and that has stopped.

Will changing my agp aperture to 256 help me at all or is 128 the best I will get?

OK, lets TRY and make this a HW thread . . .
Adding 512 MB shouldn't make much much difference in Doom III . . . according to this article by X-bit labs
Test 4: Memory for Doom 3 it's from the article about chosing the BEST cpu for Doom III
As you see, 512MB of system memory is enough for all the quality settings, except the maximum ones. The amount of textures the game uses in this mode exceeds 512MB and the game honestly warns you about that as you try to enable this mode. Otherwise, half a gigabyte is enough for a comfortable play.

Conclusion:

So we can draw two points from our today?s tests. First, the standard test method that measures the average fps rate when playing a demo cannot be used for a correct comparison of CPU performance in Doom 3. More precise results can be achieved in real gaming environment only. Second, our tests don?t reveal a clear performance leader among the topmost models of the Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 series. It would be imprudent to claim that a particular CPU architecture suits better for playing Doom 3: the Athlon 64 FX-53 is about as fast as the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition and the Athlon 64 3800+ equals the Pentium 4 560. We could continue drawing parallels longer, though.

The older Athlon XP CPU family cannot compete with the new Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 models anymore. In real tests we encountered situations when the fps rate got below the comfortable value of 30 with Athlon XPs. By the way, the same can be seen with Athlon 64 3000+ and 3200+ CPUs. That?s why we recommend you to use Pentium 4 models with frequencies from 3GHz up and Athlon 64 models with ratings from 3200+ up, if you want to be absolutely warranted against any accidental slowdowns.

and try changing you apt size . . . can't hurt and you can change it back. ;)

wut makes a game really good is by basing the game on gameplay, not just graphics. if doom3 had plain half-life gfx, how would you like it? sure, it's scary, but it's also really straight forward. multiplayer sux nuts and doom 3 is seriously a simple game. only skill required is to aim straight and conserve ammo. other then that, there's basically only one way to go and the whole game is scripted the same everytime you die and try again. because it's gfx are amazingly crazy, that's why it's popular. i've played it and i dont imagine i can play the game again after i beat it. it's gonna be the same exact thing over. IMO, a strong multiplayer function is the best feature of the game, and sadly, doom 3 sucks with it.

there ain't no comparo between thiz and farcry, even the best reviews of doomz are reserved and inhibited and mention about the faults, I mean it's mostly hype, but even the over hyped peeps out there can't fail to disregard all the disappointments - but the funny thing is in the end they may still give a high score even after saying it could be boringo... it's almost like these people were pre-conditioned to say it's a good game after the longest wait in history, and even after noticing the problems, they only give it a little lower score than what they were fixated on giving before hand. I think if this exact same game came out as anonymous game from unknown developer, without the doom hype behind it, it would get a max score of 7.5.
