Why does every AT discussion lead to personal attacks?

I'm just wondering why AnandTech discussions always end up just being personal attacks.

I think it's the anonymity offered by the forums. If these discussions were face to face, people would be less likely to insult you.

What do you think?

I would have to dis-agree. I think the personal attacks come when they are warranted. I am thinking of a thread last night that had some bad jokes along with a bad attitude....

I think you need to lay the hell off everybody, jackass...

:-D Joking, for those unable to 'get it'.

Eventually one side runs out of arguments, but doesn't want to give up the argument, so they start personal attacks (and with some discussions, this happens around the second post, in cases where the original point is so completely lame and stupid that it can't be defended). Once that starts, the opposing side often feels the need to retaliate in kind, but often they continue real argument, which just makes the 1st person look even worse.

The same thing does happen in real life, it just doesn't get quite so heated and such strong insults aren't often used. When they are, usually gunplay occurs. :)

When people are not bright enough to express themselves, or to argue their point, they begin to attack. And of course these dicsussions would be different face to face, what people say here and what they are brave enough to say to someones face if quite different!

Eh, it's fun :p And it's normal for arguments/debates to get a little heated. If you don't like it, don't read it. As long as it's not offensive to someone, I have no problem with those arguments that go on for a hundred posts :p

I'm sure too that if we were all together in a room some of the name calling would subside a bit when we actually see who it is were talking to.

In here we can all be big shots and shoot off our mouths though with out having to worry about getting slapped or shot at.

there are people who need to dial back on their passsion for certain viewpoints. they may have a legitimate pov but their anger spills over into bad manners. just poo poo them and tell them to
behave or you'll ignore them.

"why AnandTech discussions always end up just being personal attacks"

I beg the differ.
There seemed to be alot of flame posts is because they stand out. You should check with Zuni or the Mods to see how many productive posts that Anandtech get per day.

I'm assuming that Anantech get more than 300 threads a day, and my guess from experience is that we may get 5 flame threads. And, according to research the average person shell out some where around 80 insults a day and about 7 positive comments...and we only see 5/300 or 1.5% for Anandtech which is excelent.

syzygy , has a good point. Soom of us are so passionate about our "cause" that if it seems like no one is listening to our POV we need to start screaming and yelling to be heard.

kami, some of us just like to be bigger "big shots " then others huh. :D

just poo poo them

I love that!

Plantanthera- Wonderful response! You are obviously not one of the individuals he is referring to.

it all depends on what you consider a 'personal attack.' If i state that i believe your opinion is wrong, and that you are arguing from an incorrect (or even foolish) premise, is that a personal attack? Or if i allude to various true statements about another person to make a point? However, if it comes to the point of name-calling, i agree with you. There's no reason to insult someone, even if you vehemently disagree with their point of view.

There's a fine line between personal attacks and a good debate. There's been a few that I've had to hold back from calling someone a complete moron. But that's what the close button is for :)

Stupid neffer.....

Just kidding. Most threads don't turn into full-on flame wars, although people do get hot headed fairly often. Most of the time, calmer heads prevail.

When a person has nothing constructive or informed to say or their argument has been disproven, it is easier to revert to insults than actually concede or conduct further research.

It's exactly like myputer said. Idiocy leads to insults. If you cannot defend your point of view, heaven forbid you actually concede you may be wrong. Instead it just works to call names. And if you notice, the teenagers on here don't really behave that way. Most of them are very mature, and can at least try to see beyond their own views. It's all the adults that act like the crybabies... ;)

Keep in mind that sometimes "You are obviously an idiot" is an appropriate statement. Of course, the idiot in question will then respond...

Anyone following the current storyline at pvponline? It is very topical!
