the speed may suck but it has everything. the completeness in selection and quality of the files on other file sharing networks cannot be compared to edonkey network. and most files are guaranteed to be complete. it might take 5 days to get, but you can be sure you are getting it. and did I mention it had everything?

kazaa blows. really poor selection. i can never find what i want on there unless it's something really popular and even then it's usually a rip instead of full iso. and it's only got really popular movies. the mp3s have crappy bitrate. not to mention the many fakes. i use it as a last resort.

winmx. what a joke. i can never connect, and even if i do i rarely get a completed file.

irc/usenet - hard to find exactly what you want when you want it, unless you are a downloading junkie who download anything

Exactly, you have to be patient for the high quality stuff that may or may not be recent. I usually just run emule on another computer, set the max upload to 10kbps (so the download is uncapped) and just let it run constantly. Usually I'll forget about it, and I'll have a nice lot of quality files ready for me when I remember.

Though, the latest stuff (Movies, games, etc.) nothing beats the pure speed of newsgroups.

it is by far the best way to get unlicensed goods and freeware 😉

the secret

have about 50-100 files on your queue, then forget about it and have it running all the time (cap uploads @10k)

check up on it in about 5-10 days

then it's like christmas everyday

"hey i got 5 files today"
"hey i got 12 files today"

etc etc etc

Its true. 😉

Newsgroups are way faster than IRC.

Overnet = eMule with a slightly "sleeker" interface. It's still the eDonkey network, and yes, I tried it, and yes, I got about 1K/sec download, assuming anything downloaded at all.

Overnet is a completly separate network without central servers. eDonkey & eMule are on the same network that has centralized servers.

I googled Overnet. What comes up is a website for "Overnet", which is soon to be called The Horde. It is eDonkey. Unless, of course, there's another overnet out there. Point me in it's direction.

If I had the netiquette for Newsgroups, I'd be there.

eMule is great, but you shouldn't search for things. Go through a releasegroup like sharereactor, where they take releases, bunch them up, and then give emule links to the proper files.

And why are all of you so scared of IRC? If you are sent a file you didn't request (not a problem these days really unless you're on a SHADY server), don't open it. You're almost 100% guaranteed to not get viruses (virii?) and to get the *REAL* file you want, not some jerk uploading a movie that is entirely without picture and sound, just takes up 700MB.

Hum... DC++ is humming along nicely, provided I find someone on a phat pipe. Only drawback is the lack of using multiple sources to speed up downloads. Really sucks since most people are on cable and DSL.

yep

i'd rather spend 10 minutes queuing up the things i'm looking for and just basically forget about it until it finishes a few days later, instead of spending hours or literally even days searching for the same stuff on newsgroups/irc - or you may not find it at all

one word: DC++
Yes, this method is hands down the best.

Yes, this method is hands down a pain in the ass if you aren't 'in the loop' and aware of good servers. I can't even find instructions on how its properly used, and what the assumed rules are.

like someone said before. emule + release websites like sharereactor / filenexus totally rock. I just fill my queu and forget about it. I'm averaging 30-40 gig a month

Well... Here's the update.

DC++ was fun for about 3 hours while I hit one guy with 125K/sec downloads. The rest were mediochre, around 10-25K/sec. And everybody is in scandanavia. Which that doesn't surprise me.

I've taked the eMule suggestions in mind, reinstalled, and have been testing that out. I did get upto 40K/sec at one point, but it didn't last long. Currently at 13.6K/sec download across 6 files - 4 of which are actually in transit.

I guess it's fire and forget from here. Be it a day or two, whatever. The one thing DC++ did however is take a WHOLE LOT of overhead up. Even only using 60K/sec on my 1.5Mbps DSL, and upstream locked at about 10K/sec, even web browsing was painful with DC++ running.

Maybe it's my turn to create a network...
