i wanted to sell something on egay and they wanted my CC number (fine I made up a temporary one with a $1 limit) - but they also wanted my full checking account including routing number and account number. Do they realize how much this must turn people off? I sure as sh*t ain't giving that to anybody except a few companies i pay bills to each month.

But they actually verify the information before letting you sell something 🙁 I remember back in the day, all ebay required was a valid email address and a credit card number to sell and only a valid email address to bid.

So basically I can't use Ebay unless I hand them over enough information for any hacker to f**k my life over then right?

They make it safer for everyone ELSE 😉

When I first signed up (Sep., 1997), they didn't even require the credit card number. Unfortunately, they were in some beta test phase that required account confirmation after it was completed, and I never did. Went back a couple years later, and tried to use the account and got nothing but error messages. POS eBay's solution was "sorry, you'll just have to sign up again." Assholes wouldn't even release my own eMail address back to me.

i hate ebay for several reasons. (i do continue to use them though)

see, theres a double standard. Skoorb wants to sell something. obviously, ebay wants them to confirm their identity. i dont have a problem with that. but, if someone wants to buy something all they need is an e-mail from jackass@myemailisfake.com and they're good to go, ripping off sellers with listing (read, listing not insertion) fees.

Yep I bid on an item today with a new account no problems.

To setup a seller i thought they'd just require CC nunber. hassel butunderstandable. Then when I saw they wanted that AND my checking account info I though hell no.

true skoorb, why? bad press. when people think ebay they think of "oh my aunt bidded on something and the seller ran with her money"...theyre doing that so the masses may flock and bid on stuff they have no intention for in bliss.

I remember reading that... That does suck 🙁

<< it's not like you're giving them your social. >>

Whats wrong with giving social security numbers? is that bad, cuz i mean theres a billion ways i can find urs out if i know ur full name...

Yeah, they don't do enough to protect from bad *buyers*. So the risk falls more on the seller than on ebay.

BTW, has anyone ever collected from ebay itself b/c of a deal gone bad?

whats bad about giving them your social.....hmm. if the wrong people get a hold of that and your full name, they can wreak havoc with your personal life. AFAIK, ebay does not use SSL (someone told me this once) with password entry and their insurance policy is limited ot $200 a transaction and only defrauded bidders can apply. sellers cant get refunds or insurance protection.

DB, what do you mean by collecting from ebay? you think they have stellar earnings reports by *gasp* refunding money on fraudulent auctions?
