Why does eBay make you log in to search completed auctions?

Probably trying to keep their servers from becoming bogged down, either from DoS type attacks or those third party search engines that can dig up ebay auctions.
 
It's to keep non-members from benefiting from using ebay as a source for price checks. As kami333 said, there are third-party sites that search ebay and obviously ebay gets no benefit from that.
