Why does DVD/CD drive not refresh when a new disc is inserted?

Anyone have an idea why a CD/DVD drive would not refresh when a disc is removed or even changed completely? (Win XP w/SP2, btw). It's getting rather irritating as I frequently swap discs to play different games. But often (usually, in fact) I will remove a disc and insert another, only to see in my explorer window that the name of the previous disc is still there by the drive letter. I can even double-click it and see the files on the previous disc. I will sometimes have to reboot completely to see a new disc.

This happens with virtual drives (Deamon Tools) as well physical drives.

Ideers?

i ran into this same exact problem in 2002. It was the cd drive. replacing only it fixed the problem. I didn't flash the firmware though being it was a only cdrom but i have a good feeling if you upgrade your dvd drive's firmware that will fix the problem, its only the one cd/dvd drive, not another one if you have one right?
