Why does Disney have to ruin a masterpiece?

New trailer has been released for the Americanized (read: Bastardized) version of Spirited Away. This is the highest grossing film, animated or otherwise in Japan's history. And when I view the trailer for this version, I just cringe. Why oh why do the voices suck so hard?

I really do hate disney. With all these crappy kid movies I have to watch commercials for and stuff, I get sick of hearing that name.

You and me both bud. I know they're helping to market this to Americans who would otherwise have no exposure to it, but why make it so awful with the voice acting? Does as much to hurt as it does to help.

Because real acting costs money and I somehow don't think this movie will make that much. :)

You have a point. Mononoke Hime only grossed something like 2 million, and they hired real actors to do that. Well, somewhat real. Even they didn't do that great a job. So I don't think Disney's going to bother straining over every little detail.

They also bought out the rights to a lot of other films, which they no doubt will delay bringing over in it's original form.

Is the American version the same one as the Japanese or being produced by the same person? The drawings look almost exactly identicle.

All i know is that Spirited Away was one of the best anime ... well movie I had watched in a long long time. I don't know if Disney is going to ruin it, but I liked the subbed one, so if anything, I could always watch that over again. :D

You're being a bit unfair here.

First of all, Studio Ghibli has final say over everything that Disney does.

Second, Mononoke Hime's low US gross had a lot more to do with its Mirimax-branded limited release than the quality of the actors that participated in it (and although I prefer to see films with the original soundtrack, that was by no means a shoddy translation or dub). It was an arthouse film, not a multiplex one. Would it have made more money if it had been distributed more widely? I'm doubtful about that (I do think that Disney is accountable for its stranglehold on the traditionally-animated feature film and its heavy influence over the American public as to what constitutes an acceptable animated feature, but I'm disputing the assertion that they're deliberately trying to mangle the source material).

Third, the delay in releasing other Ghibli films (I've been waiting on a theatrical release of Laputa since the deal was struck) was not Disney's doing, but a restriction imposed by Ghibli to not interfere with the region 2 release of the film (along with a bunch of other Ghibli classics).

Fourth, if you can't trust John Lasseter to do a good job overseeing the dubbing process, who can you trust?

The text is about three-quarters down the page.

Even if it sucks, go see it anyways to make it worth their while to have at least attempted it. If nobody sees it, they have no incentive to try again...

And here's another vote of confidence for Mr. Lasseter -- the man has incredibly high standards and loves this stuff.

There were at least a couple of screenings of the film out on the West Coast earlier this year. It's also scheduled to play at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.

The current release schedule has it opening in 10 US cities on September 20th, with at least nine more cities listed for its nationwide release. Sadly, this probably means I won't see it until closer to November.

If you want to see Spirited Away now, Usenet has always been reliable for me... ;)

I thought the English dubbing for Princess Mononoke was quite good, actually. Only Billy Bob Thornton's voice seemed out of place. Mononoke in the theater (and in English) was my introduction to Japanese Anime, and I've been fan ever since!

That's how Disney became what it is... take other people's work, sanitize it for american kids, and make millions.

They know how much money can be made from someone else's work. That's why they're so paranoid about people stealing their stuff.
