Why does digital signage have to be so complicated?!

So I got the idea passed at work to install a TV in our lobby, hook up a PC I'm donating to it, and use it as a digital signage system of sorts. I will have it displaying the daily activity calendar, any changes, food menu, event calendar, etc. Nothing special. I had planned on hooking the machine up and looping a Powerpoint presentation that would be updated each day or even weekly. However, I decided to go out and see if there was any free software out there that would allow me to do this remotely without having to interrupt the feed with each update. I found a plethora of free options but all seem overly complicated! I need a Windows Server, cloud setup, CSS experience, programming experience, etc. all for what is a glorified digital picture frame! I was hoping to find something that that I could install on the PC (or Mac), remote into, and plug in any pertinent info for the day, new pictures, etc. Am I over-complicating this or is my original idea of a regularly updated Powerpoint presentation the best idea?
