I'm trying to order a 2405FPW monitor from Dell, but those crazy bastages want to charge me tax. The whole point of me ordering from Dell is so that I don't have to pay tax.

What's going on? I'm scared. :Q

they do that now. If they have a presense in your state then you are taxed.

From Dell's Website

The amount of tax and shipping added to your order depends on where you have asked for the product to be shipped as well as on which products you've chosen to purchase. Dell Catalog Sales LP currently collects applicable sales tax in California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. In other states, the purchaser is responsible for remitting the use tax on all taxable items to the appropriate state tax authorities. Dell does collect sales tax for On-Site Service contracts in all applicable states.

I know dell collects from certain states, like in the post above, but it is also law that internet venders must charge sales tax for all inter-state commerce.

Yeah.

That will probably prevent me from ordering my laptop from them this summer.

Oh, well. What are you going to do?

Do you live close to a state border? Have a relative over there?

Option 2 is to say "screw Dell and their sales tax" and buy one from ebay. For some reason there's a HUUUUGE surplus of brand new Dell monitors there, you might even find one cheaper than Dell is asking.

i don't know if its a law, but most vendors do it if they are in the same state as you.

I really don't feel like searching, I was just going by what I remember being posted here years ago.
I think it was more along the lines that the consumer is suppose to keep track of internet sales and then remit payment to the state for the sales tax they did not pay. At least that's what I read from a quick 5 second search.
A quick search on google for "internet sales tax law" nets lots of results.

lol. people will be PM'ing you to receive DELL orders over there in Nebraska and ship the items out. it'd still be cheaper than having Dell ship direct, lol.
