This. You sign a contract and you agreed to the searches. Searching a bag at a public department store once you've paid for an item is an illegal search because there is no contract to sign. Around Christmas time stores like to stop you and check receipts. I just walk around the line and leave without issue normally. I was only significantly challenged once at a Best Buy. I asked the guy if I was being detained, held my cell phone up in the air, and told him I'd call the police for him. He let me pass.

Ok, but what is the store to do if they suspect the person is about to exit with items not paid for?

The Costco where I usually shop at they usually do ask when inspecting my receipt if they see any Gift Cards or Movie Tickets, they make sure I got them.

The only time I find it irritating is when their is a line of people trying to get out and they only have one person manning the door. They are usually fairly good about getting a second person at the door quicky.

Ive had a Costco membership for at least 12 years ( since my daughter was born) and they didnt have the inspections up front. They were notorious about not checking all my items out at the checkout. Seriously, when there was only one cashier by themselves, they would miss my water almost every time in the bottom of the cart. I was getting overloaded with paper towels that I never paid for, clothes not scanned, you name it. Then they must have done an audit and realized how much they were losing. I remember very well when they started to put tag teams on the registers to help out. Then the security was set up to triple check the accuracy. Still, they miss stuff and security catches it.

As for Best Buy and their ilk, they cannot forcibly stop you for just a random check of your receipt. They have to have a reason, like they observed you pocketing that Gay Cowboys in Bondage deluxe Bluray DVD, otherwise you can get them in serious trouble. I walk right past them all the time and the guy will say " Sir, we need to check your receipt" and I say no you dont. Never, ever, been stopped because of that.

Peace

What exactly is the point of this thread? Does the 5-10 seconds spent having your receipt checked really inconvenience you that much?
