Why does cheap beer taste better than expensive beer?

is it because those expensive beers need lots of extra stuff to mask all the extra alcohol?

I don't like beer, but I've never thought that the cheap commodity beers taste better than most of the expensive beers I've tried. There are weird exceptions, but in general I find the craft beers better. Not good, just better.

cheap beer is watered down, and tastes like water.

expensive beer has more flavor from the various ingredients (hopps or other)
each is different

you dont truly like the flavor of beer, try zima

Cheap beer is not literally "watered down" so much as not "brewed up."

Think of it like you might think of coffee. First, the ingredients matter. GIGO: Garbage in, garbage out. And then, beer is brewed. Brewing is a process. Good beer uses premium hops and malt and grains and such, commodity beer doesn't. And, with commodity beer, shortcuts and outright BS are taken in the brewing process. Think of the egregiously disgusting ICE beers. Ugh.

Anyway, in order to save the corporation brewing it pennies on each . . . can . . . crap materials and a hurried, cheap-ass process are used.

The result? This BUD's for YOU! 😱

Well there are some cheap beers that are good and some expensive beers that are bad. I guess its personal preference. IPAs are usually expensive but a lot of people think they are too bitter.

when 50% of the cost of a beer in Ontario goes to taxes..I have no choice but to drink budget beers.

I generally find that lagers taste like fermented donkey piss, and doubly so if they get warm. Most cheap beers are lagers. So generally I find that cheap beers taste like fermented donkey piss.

Is $9 for a six pack "expensive"?
I used to think so, but with inflation, that's a solid middle of the road beer. It's also about my cap. I like all kinds of beer, but I prefer spirits if I'm gonna spend real money. My goto "good" beer is Guinness. About $8/6pack here. Increased distribution has defied inflation in this case. The bottles got modestly smaller, but the price is the same as it was in the early 90s. My goto "cheap" beer is some variety of Yuengling. It's hipster cred has made the price higher than it should be, but it's a Budweiser priced beer that tastes twice as good.

I will answer that with another question.

Why is taste subjective? There are people out there who don't like the things I like. I just can't get it.

there are a lot of additives in cheaper beer or adjuncts as they are called.

beer requires high quality ingredients to make great beer. Water, hops, yeast, malt etc... needs to high quality not to mention their equipment needs to be good, too.

I live in a beer city: London, Ontario is home to Labatts and Carling (unfortunately now owned by Molsons).

Sometimes a cheaper beer like a new glarus spotted cow or a can of Gose is perfect way to close out an afternoon.
Sometimes, I want a more pricy double imperial stout or american stout.

i'm enjoying a carling ice right now
Carling Ice used to be great. I remember when it first came out as I was given a bottle when the bar was testing it out.

Carling Strong was good, too.

This was before Molsons bought them out.
