Why does breaking the neck kill a person/animal?

It's not the breaking of the neck, it's the damage to the nervous system.

If you cant get the electrical signals to the heart/lungs and other organs, they dont work. They dont work you die. Breaking the neck pinches or severs those signals.

1) Sever the spinal cord
2) Internal hemmorhage
3) Cut off the airway
4) Traumatic shock

Yep, the brain runs the body. Break the only link the brain has to the rest of the body and the body stops working.

Plus a blow to the neck causing a clean break usually results in unconsciousness, making it a fairly painless death.

Organs are run by the Limbic system. It's get's it's orders from the brain. No orders, no worky. No worky, no life. The brain is reasonbly protected by the skull. If there's a weak spot, it's the neck area. That's why the US Marines wore leather collars before WWII, to protect the neck area from saber blows. Hence the name "Leathernecks."
