Why does being good feel so bad.

Long story short:

I went into the restroom at work;
One of the guys on our floor (not from my company) left his iPad 1 in the stall (and I knew it was his because I saw him with it earlier today);
Even though I really want an iPad, I returned it to him immediately because I knew it was the right thing to do.

Now, I kinda feel like such a sucker for doing the right thing. Why can't doing the right thing feel better (at least for me).

A thanks should be reward enough, if the guy had kicked you in the balls then you have a right to feel bad.

high 5 for you, motion. you did the right thing.

imagine you accidentally left something someplace and someone had the opportunity to return it to you and kept it instead... would you want to be that asshole who stole from you?

feel good that you're a decent human being. don't feel bad because you didn't steal someone else's material possession.

Later on in the day, the guy is surfing on his iPad while driving home from work. Boom! He gets into a head-on collision and all occupants are dead. Damn. You should have kept the iPad and saved some lives.

Or Apple shouldn't have ever made it in the first place.

Wouldn't you have felt like a thieving dirtbag if you had kept it? How could you have not? How could you have ever really enjoyed it, knowing what you had done?

I've always instinctively and immediately done the right thing in circumstances such as this, and never once felt bad about it. In fact, just the opposite.

Feel good about yourself, MM. Feel strong. Honest men get to sleep well at night, and their bad karma never comes back to bite them.

I've been doing things "right" my whole life.
And frankly it sucks. I usually get fucked over for my kindness. Am pretty sure I'd be a lot happier if I just did want I wanted.

The real question is what percent of iPad usage occurs on the toilet? That's why I'd never buy a used one.

This is exactly right. If for some reason you have to think about returning the fellows ipad, ask yourself a simple question, is it worth being a thief for a couple hundred bucks? I don't know about you, but my integrity is worth a hell of a lot more than that. Doing the right thing is it's own reward.

How would you feel if someone returned your valuable item? Let that feeling in.

Oh, I totally get the "do unto others" aspect of things and, of course I would want my item returned. I just feel more and more that being good is becoming a liability in the real world (and in my profession).

I do not plan on changing, I just had to vent.

I knew that immediately, too. My wife said the same thing.

I wish that were true, but I have seen first hand the good guy get screwed while the bad guy not only gets away with it, but profits from it.

Good people benefit most on the inside while bad people seem to benefit the most on the outside.

trust me, i feel the same way sometimes. especially when you see the unethical [whatever your profession is] profitting big off of what you feel to be immoral or unethical and you're struggling because you're being straight up and honest, the way you should be.

It was an iPad 1 and I know how to wipe it clean without much delay.

My buddy asked me if it was an iPad 1 or 2. I joked that if it was an iPad 2, we would not be having this conversation. ;)

Butterfly effect... what if by keeping the iPad, the original owner decided to go to the Apple store to pick up the iPad 2 that he had been wanting but had no reason to get because the current one was working just fine. At the Apple store, he meets his wife to be or husband to be. They have a kid and their kid invents a time machine and comes back in time to tell you thanks for keeping the iPad and rewards you handsomely with stock/sports tips!

I agree. I know I could not have kept it, for many reasons, including being an example for my children.
