For me it depends. If they're already in the house, I'm not gonna give myself away by telling them I'm armed and ready to shoot. If they're still attempting to break in and I know exactly where they'll enter from, then they get some warning.

True, I'm not saying it is the right thing to do, just saying why people announce it. I would probably take a more coldblooded approach myself and beat them with my axe or hammer.
