Why does Anti-Vir always have to communicate/send data through the firewall?

As the title says. When i tested out Anti-vir when i was using ZA I always needed to allow the modules access to the internet which they then used to communicate with eachother (as I understand). How come Anti-Vir needed to do that?

Is this when it is doing a check for updates?

From the ZA thread maybe it's ZA lying to do its own report to its servers < /tinfoil >

Nope not that! heh. It's just when it regularly sits in the background doing is guarding business - to work I have to allow it access to the internet (also same with scans) - which translates to one module being able to communicate with another. That's my understanding of how its working anyway.
