Why does Amazon.com lie so much?

I ordered something last Friday, and granted I didn't expect it to go out over the weekend, but it did say in the description "Usually ships within 24 hours...". The estimated shipping date is the 26th, and it's not expected to show up here until sometime in early January.

Does Amazon purposely push back shipping dates when you choose their free shipping? If I had chosen to pay another $6 or so for the next step up would they have shipped it out in 24 hours, or would I still be waiting several weeks for it?

Note that this has happened before, it's almost guaranteed that if you choose the "free" shipping method, you'll be paying for it with several weeks of waiting for your item(s).
