Why does AIM have those crappy colors?

I'd like to have nice looking text/background (maybe black/white on burnt orange), but AIM only lets you choose from 24 ugly colors and then grayscale. Why did they do that? Why can't they enable the custom colors? Does it give AOL that much pleasure to force us to choose from 4 ugly greens and 2 identical oranges??

They are the worst invention ever because the colors are so terrible. My friend wrote a program that lets you choose whatever color you want, and now I'm using a nice light blue-grey with black text.
