When opening a pdf in a browser, and then when closing it, it practically locks up the computer !

There's a program on this page called Adobe Reader Speed Up which helps a little, in letting you eliminate plugins and unncessary crapola when it starts up.
But the actual software itself is still a hog. And there are a few different programs like the one above that do the same thing, so you might have better luck with others.
