why does add to favorites save me 2 links, one of which doesn't work?

I've just imported shortcuts into a new win7 64 build from an old xp machine; those all work fine, but most of the time now when I save a new bookmark I get 2 entries- one that doesn't work. I get "problem with shortcut the target of this internet shortcut is not valid. go to the internet shortcut property sheet and make sure the target is correct" if I click on it in the shortcut folder, and it doesn't do anything if I click on it in the favorites tab in ie8...
what have I done?

I am having the same problem and from what I can determine it might be AVG if you have it installed.

I do have AVG installed; have you tried without it? I have had link scanner disabled since I installed it, since it was slowing down the browser in my last machine. let me know if removing it worked for you...

I removed AVG and went with Microsoft Essentials and it seems to have stopped the double entry problem in Favorites.

Looks like it was AVG for me as well, its gone now and so are the problems
