Why does a perfectly good 54mbps connection drop to 11mbps?

I have a Buffalo 802.11g router, on my computer upstairs I can get an "excellent" signal with a 54mbps connection. I'll see it drop to 48mpbs sometimes, and that's fine. But every once in awhile I'll look and it will have an 11mbps connection.

Why is it doing this? If I can get an excellent signal at 54mbps, shouldn't it stay there? If I go into the router config and switch the channel its using, it will go back to 54mbps for the time being, but at some point may drop back to 11.

Any advice?

Any 2.4ghz cordless phones in your house? How about the neighbors? Neighbors have an overlapping 802.11g network?

also:
If all your network devices are 802.11g, make sure your router config is set to "g" as opposed to "b - g compatible".

I don't have any cordless phones, don't know about the neighbors but I'm sure it's possible. It is set to G only mode (rather than B & G)

Many things could cause this to happen. 48Mbs is VERY good speed for plain "G". I know that weather also has an effect on my wireless. Many things can affect a wireless network, just play around till you find out what is wrong with yours.

802.11g usually drops down in the persense of 802.11b signal.

If you or some else within reception distance has a transmitting 802.11b source the 802.11g would drop down.

Well, I switched the security of the router from WEP to WPA, and for whatever reason, the drops in speed aren't occuring anymore. Not sure if that's a coincidence or not, but I haven't noticed a drop below 48mpbs in several days now.
