Why does a can of chili have corrugated sides?

Seems like almost all cans of food these days have corrugated sides. Why do they do that? It makes it hard to get all the food out of the can. If it weren't for those ribs you could run a spatula around it and waste less food.

probably for pressure and strength reasons. a ribbed can is more likely to absorb impacts than a flat can.

Because they contain the musical fruit.
And the corrugated sides make for a mini-washboard to play on.

maybe easier for machines to handle. The corregated sides could be on a track or in help with them being picked up.
