Why does a 35$ dvd player work better than a 2000$ computer?

I know that a dvd player has one purpose, but shouldn't a computer play dvd's just as well. I don't know if it's the software i'm using or what but my computer wont play dvd's wort a crap.

so no excuse in the hardware department

a p3 500 with 128meg ram and just about any circa 2000 video card with mpeg2 acceleration will play DVDs just fine

Software is the problem with dvds+PC's. Sony and their technologies.

I never had a problem with them other than finding a player software I liked.

Dude, my DVD-ROM drive (16x Pioneer) slaps around any stand alone DVD player. Get a good DVD drive and PowerDVD and you'll be set.

i've had more lucky w/ standalones when it comes to errors in the media though.. my PC will choke and refuse to play while the standalone will seemingly ignore and skip it. heh.

If you have such equipment the only thing restraining you is your ignorance

Purevideo is very good, and well worth the small amount of money it costs.

Personally I keep my PC and home cinema separate, and as a result Purevideo does not get much of a work out.
