Why does 845PE score much better in Canterwood vs Springdale review?!..

How come that in the Springdale review the Business Winstone 2002 benchmark result for the 845PE is different then in the Canterwood review?! That doesn't make sense, does it?!:

In the Canterwood review here http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=1811&p=10 the Business Winstone 2002 results are:

- 845PE: 34.8
- 875P: 32.9

Note: Not much people have perhaps noticed this, but this means that the 845PE scores much better then the 875P! Related to this they note: "Here we see the unfortunate effects of not having Intel Application Accelerator support for the new ICH, thus the 875P falls behind even the 845PE"!

However in the Springdale review here http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=1823&p=10 the Business Winstone 2002 results are different!:

- 865PE: 33
- 875P: 33
- 845PE: 31

So here the same 845PE only get 31 instead of 34.8? Anybody can clarify this as it doesn't make sense to me?!! Thanks in advance!

Mike.

Well, one thing I noticed is that the tests were not run with the same CPU. The Canterwood test was done with their 3.06 and the Sprindale test was done with their 3.0C, which I believe has an unlocked multiplier. Since I didn't see anything about another CPU, I am guessing they just changed the multiplier for the 533 FSB testing. Maybe the new D1 stepping is faster than the C1, all other things being equal. I also noticed that difference boards were used for each test. On the other hand, it could just be a fluke!

Uhm... I think the point about no application accelerator explains it. Would be nice to see how the 845PE performed with the default drivers as well so we can see exactly how much they help.

But this still doesn't explain why in the Springdale review the Business Winstone 2002 benchmark result for the 845PE is different then in the Canterwood review? The fact that they used different CPUs could obviously be a reason, but then the scores for all chipsets would be proportionally lower or higher, so I don't understand why the 845PE does so much worse in the Springdale review then in the Canterwood review, where the 875P scores more or less the same in both reviews if I am seeing it right?!

Anybody can clarify this? Thanks in advance!

Hmmm...it's not real clear what clock speeds were being used in the Canterwood review. They were all tested with a 533MHz bus using the same CPU, 3.06GHz. Then in the Springdale review the 845PE was using only a 2.8GHz CPU on a 533MHz bus. Only the 865 and 875 were tested with the 3.0C and 800MHz bus. So there was actually a 266MHz CPU speed drop for the 845PE in the Springdale review. I don't really see what the point of that was, they obviously have a 3.06GHz CPU and it'd make sense to always use the same speed processor for reviews, and especially one that's closer to the same speed CPU being used in the 800MHz tests.

By the way, the AT Articles forum would have been a better place to ask. Or at least, the right place to ask, you wouldn't necessarily get a response.
