The 80s had some great creative music and some excellent melodies. The late 80s were pretty bad, though. The black eye of the 80s was all forms of metal.

I know these forums are filled with know-it-alls and contrarians, but excellent final point on why a comma after 'and' is redundant.

No one suggested that a comma would ever come *after* that word. The question was about whether-or-not it appears before it.

His [original] point was [about apostrophes]:

Correct (when referring to a decade)
  • 1980s
  • '80s

Incorrect (when referring to a decade)
  • 1980's
  • 80's

I guess he may as well point that out in this thread since the incorrect usage is so prevalent.

Please explain why you said black eye of 80s were all forms of metal?

Obviously. :) I meant to write "before," but since upgrading to Windows 11 forum editing suddenly has become non-functional. Damn you Microsoft. lol

Stadium Rock / Hair Bands were iconic in the 80s.
When grunge came out in the early 90s, it was the complete opposite.

Since I am a grunge fan, I have always thought of 80s hair bands as ridiculous.
They cared more about their flames and stadium shows than the music.

Grunge = flannel + guitar

:)

I purposely made that mistake to give someone here the gratification. ;) And yeah, I've tried dumping it, old habits die hard....

Well, since it works about as well as Windows, it's the logical way to identify it. :p

Seriously, get FF and Adblocker+. (Nakedfrog, if you're reading this, thank you!)

It all sounded the same. The ridiculous guitar solos that were more technical exercises than creative expression, the boring rhythms (poor drummers and bassists), the terrible juvenile lyrics, cheese melodies, the men that looked like women, etc. It was all about selling to a particular demographic- horny wannabe-rebel teens. I guess it is similar to rap in that people got/get a sense of power listening to it... although rap seems to be much more potent.

This isn't to say that there wasn't other crappy during the 80s, but no one sub-genre was so consistently and thoroughly rotten.

I grew up on 80s music. These songs bring back memories, some bitter sweet.
It was a great time for music and an innocent time compared to today. The music reflected that innocence.

Shouldn't matter as much of pop music has remained relatively the same across various decades, i.e., around three minutes of music and 15-or-so bars, three chords, major scales, regular beat, etc.
