Why does 480i look better on TV vs a Monitor?

480i is still the standard for most digital television or am I wrong? I haven't owned a TV in over 5 years.

I never owned a flat panel TV, but my old Sony had excellent picture quality.

Why is it when you watch a 480i video on a computer monitor it's more pixelated? My Sony was a 34" where as my monitor is a 22". If anything the quality should be better because the monitor is smaller.

Monitors are higher quality, therefore imperfections are more apparent with the image. Also, viewing distance is another factor - nobody watches HDTV from a foot away, while that is common for a PC monitor.

For two good reasons.

One: a CRT can display a 480 line NTSC signal without having to re-scale it.
Two: a CRT can display an interlaced signal properly without having to de-interlace it.

Add to that the fact that a good CRT tube like a Trinitron will have vastly better color accuracy, response time, and black levels than any LCD on the market, and you should have your answer.

no it's not the viewing factor lol I could go up close and it's not pixelated like monitor.

All the TVs are LCD now. So are you saying if you watch 480i on them it will be pixelated just like a monitor?

Yes.

480i needs to be first de-interlaced to 480p, and then up-scaled to 1080p. This will never look as good as a 480i signal being displayed on 525 native scanning lines. You can use the best de-interlacing method, and the best up-scaling method, and it still won't look free of artifacts.

Blur I guess. Old CRT TVs were analog and just by adding some tweaks you could find awesome TVs as the Sony Trinitron. There's one at my grandmother's place that still looks fairly fine. CRT TVs are nowhere as sharp as LCDs.

You can check it by playing a NES emulator at native resolution in your PC. In a 1080p 24" panel it looks so tiny that it's almost unplayable. If you go full screen it's a blocky mess. If you play a NES in a CRT TV it will look way better.

As for PC you have stuff like MadVR doing great upscaling when you see superlow resolution video in full screen.

EDIT: I'm watching again Due South and it's really painful in a 1080p 24" LCD monitor.

Go to Vimeo.com

Look for the search bar in the top right

Look for "Timescapes 4K"

Enjoy.

Most internet video is compressed(youtube has Timescapes as well, look at both to see the difference).

I would bet television video is compressed less than most internet video, and CRTs display lower quality video better than LCDs.

i think the question is why does it look better on an old tube TV vs a computer monitor? If that's the case, the answer is pixel shape.

Round pixels on the old tube will make images look better than on your monitor, but conversely, if you try to type a word document on that TV, it'll be tough to read.

What quality difference is there from a 1080p TV monitor to 1080p computer monitor? If you hook them up to the computer that is.

Generally.. Not a lot at that point. The difference usually comes into the panels used.. Nowadays the difference between a monitor and a tv is just in the electronics.
