Why do young guys wear their pants around their ankles?

Yeah the poopy pants look. I am a middle school teacher and constantly have to tell them to pull them up. I don't understand it, even if I were a teen today there would no way I would wear my pants like that.

Made by popular by the gangsta/hip-hop scene. Actually started in prison because prisoners aren't allowed to have belts so the gangsta's would wear them loose and let them hang.

Frankly, I laugh everytime I see some wannabe hip-hop gangsta walking around having to hold up their pants to keep them from dropping.

Nope, you are all wrong. When I went to middle school(late 70's to 80's)I don't recall any particular style besides jeans and shirts or t-shirts. I was never one to give in to peer pressure though and would not care what people though of my "normal" clothing.
