From personal experience:

- Don't play Sony Online Entertainment games. This means EQ 1/2 and Star Wars Galaxies, and their MMOFPS, Planetside. They are to their customers what a gay 6'10" inmate named Bubba is to a new prisoner with a nice ass.

- Don't play WoW unless you love PvP. The only current difference between this game and an FPS is that you have to level up first in this game before engaging in endless PvP.

I just downloaded the Anarchy Online client and will comment on it if asked after I've gotten my feet wet in it. Also am looking forward to Vanguard, which is being produced by some very talented & proven people.

It's true to a certain extent. But if you can play with your S.O. that changes things, wouldn't you agree?
No offense to anyone here, but if your SO actually likes MMORPGs, check her crotch...IT'S A MAN, BABY!

Don't do it.... seriously... You're better off not starting. It will eat your time, and energy. Only when you quit do you realize that it wasnt even that fun, and you realize all the other things you were missing out on.

but isee everyone having fun in mmorpg's and i kind of want to experience it too. i just want to know what i'm getting into. I want to know what makes certain mmorpgs so attractive to people :D

Why not start with a single user RPG... get Morrowind, at least in morrowind you can get up and walk away if you need to with out feeling like you're abandoning a whole bunch of people.

The big problem with MMORPGS is that the high level of collaboration in parties means that you have to make a commitment to a group for however long it takes to accomplish a particular mission. If you leave the party early you pretty much doom the group to fail. Do this a few times and you'll start finding it difficult to get groups. This ropes you in bad. Your friends will call you up, to go do something in real life, and you'll turn them down because you've committed yourself to a 4 hour dungeon. It certainly makes things like dating damn near impossible.

I use to play a text based MMORPG called gemstone back when I was in high school. The game didn't even have freaking graphics and I was addicted to it. I would wake up early just to play it, and I hate the morning. I've been thinking about giving WoW a try because I got a $50 gift certificate, but I don't know...

Ummm... yeah. My wife plays WoW, and is definitely not a man. That is just a retarded statement. We have a great time playing together, and have many real life friends that we play with. Then again, we also do things with our real life friends outside of WoW! I've been playing since december, and have yet to get either bored with it or addicted to it. I haven't played since last weekend, simply because I've had too many things to do IRL. Then again, I'm not really the type that has a predisposition to addiction. WoW is a great game, and I would disagree that it is only for those that like PvP. I almost never go PvP, and have very much enjoyed the game... there is still much more of the world yet to explore! It's not for everyone. If you have the tendancy to get addicted to things, you should probably stay away unless you have nothing better to do. If you have some semblance of self control, then give it a shot. Maybe you'll like it... maybe you won't.

Try Ragnarok Online. They have 2 weeks free trial and so does most other MMORPG games I think.

there are more females in my guild (about a dozen that i know personally) and they have get togethers (going to restaurants, karaokes, etc) every other week or so. perhaps there is a little more to the MMORPG gaming scene that what you have been exposed to?

think of it as another way to meet people. way better than having a 'life' going to clubs in pursuit of random sloppy butt or cleavage  besides, you make it sound like all MMORPG players do nothing but playing the game; might have been the case with UO, not the case with the game i am playing at least.
