Grew up there? Yes

Work? Family? Both

Is where you live where you plan to retire/die? Maybe. Living in Rome makes me want to experience living in other places but picking up your bags and moving is easier said than done. Orange County will be nice when I make a lot more money

What are some pros and cons of where you live? It's Orange County

Do people automatically assume things about you when you tell them where you are from? "You're from the OC? You must be ballin. How's your house overlooking the ocean?"

My parents tell stories of when 28 was just a single lane dirt road.
They used to drive from Philadelphia to Fredericksburg and see my god parents.
That was 1980 if I'm not mistaken.

lol um no. 28 was in the process of being widened from 2 to 4 lanes in 1983 and even then it was 4 lanes from Bull Run to Manassas. I'm pretty sure it has been a paved road since the 1950's as those old cape cods in Manassas Park were around then.

I've moved quite a bit.

Originally from IL.
Went to college in IA and lived there for 10 years.
Did some time in Phoenix.
Lived in Omaha for a year.
Moved back to IL for another 8 years.
Now I live in Kentucky.

Our recent move was probably the single biggest one of my life due to the total uprooting it required. Both my wife and I took new jobs. My daughter finished up her kindergarten year in a different state. We're now 7 hours away from my family.

Why did we do it? Lots of reasons.

- My wife hit a ceiling of what she could do with her job. Now she's in one of the best programs in the country in her field.
- Her schedule also greatly improved with her getting rid of 2nd shifts and a lot less weekends
- We went from a tank of gas every 3 days from driving to a tank of gas a month due to where we live and where we work now
- My daughter had some special needs that we couldn't address well where we were and she is absolutely thriving now where we are
- It's a hell of a lot prettier here than Central IL
- Our neighborhood is awesome
- Fuck snow. Winters here are lot better
- Fuck IL, it's politics, and it's taxes

Will I retire here? Good chance. State laws are better for retirement. Winters are better. And there's a lot more to do and access.

As for reactions from others...most people said....Kentucky???? But Lexington is a beautiful area. The university is great for a more open attitude. It's got a very growing beer and foodie industry. And it's one of the most educated cities in the country. It's not Appalachia.
