I need some help here, this isnt a smartass question or anything I'm really trying to figure out why people like the games that im going to list. I'm asking because Me and some friends are trying to make a Full Conversion for Unreal Tournament 2004 and we can't really figure out why people like these games.

Call of Duty
Counter-Strike
Battlefield 1942/Vietnam

These are the most popular games right now and IMO they are all severly lacking. I used to be an avid counter-strike player but the game has just gotten worse and worse over time IMO. Call of Duty, when i played it, was nothing special, just another WWII game like DOD or MOHAA or any other game out there you can think of. Battlefield and its huge maps make for slow and boring gameplay. Vehicles seem to have saved this game but surely people would get bored of it if the vehicles were the only thing people liked about it? Anyway enough of my opinion, why do you guys like these games?

Thanks but thats obviously not the point, I was asking for reasons why you like it and just give some brief reasons why I don't like them. I'm not trying to say I'm right; I'm just trying to gather some information so hopefully my friends and I can make something that people will enjoy, not just us.

I abandoned CS a while ago, but Im still going strong on BF1942. For large maps I usually use vehicles to get somewhere (I'm a crappy flyer), but most of the maps are designed so there are action points close to any give place. You should just play the smaller maps. I've had many a Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers moments in the game... and getting a 100-8 record is also fun;)

for me, I still play CS because of 1 map only and that is fy_iceworld. Quick rounds, ability to sneek up and knife people, buy scripts, and lots people crammed into a tight space. That's CS at its best...

I play CS at lan centers with my friends. That way theres no chance of cheating. I always liked cs cuz its a really team based game, usually one guy can't dominate everyone. Have you ever tried 5v5 counterstrke? I use to play in leagues and junk and that was fun until the cheaters became too much to handle.

Used to play CS, then i just got tired of being called a hack and a cheater every 5min cause i was better than the other players, that and the amount of hackers is disgusting. I also played BF1942 but it got old to me, i foud desert combat more interesting.

I think the meain reason why i liked those two games was/is becasue of the team aspect. I liked being part of a unit and trying to acomplish a goal ( save hostage, blow up nuke, take control points etc) its just fun to play as a team and work together. I mean lone wolfing it is fun every once and awhle but the team dynamic is what made me keepcoming back to it.

I agree with Battlefield, the only saving grace is the vehicles. Call of Duty was fun, but I lost interest because it didnt have much depth. It seems as though the majority of the gaming community is attracted to mediocrity. Wish more poeple played RainbowSix 3 and UT2004, which have alot more replayability and depth.

Alright, I've posted this on a couple of forums and the main response is usually 'the team aspect' there are THOUSANDS of games that are team-based that receive virtually no support. What is it specifically about these team games that you like? Sorry for being picky I know its not easy to nail a response down to this question.

Science & Industry for HL I thought was a well-done teambased mod that has not done so well.
Urban Terror for Quake 3
Tactical Ops for UT
Threewave CTF for Q3

I liked Science and Industry, but I haven't played it in a while because not many other people did.. :(
Tac Ops pretty good, but I played CS, back then CS was still good. :p
Threewave CTF and Urban Terror, well, I never liked Q3 so I never had a copy of it to play these. ;)

I liked and played tac ops quite frequently, never really got into the hal life mods other than DOD and CS so i cant say much about Science and Industry. Also didnt like quake3 that much so never played the mods.

I don't. CS looks like it might be fun, but cheaters and lack of time have kept me from trying it.

Job #2 (after #1 of making it fun) is having strong anti-cheating. In picking the game to mod you should pay attention to what level of anti-cheating is in the core game and/or can be added to your mod.

I had a lot of fun playing Quake2 CTF, untill scum with speed cheats and other hacks ruined the public servers.

I'm playing some UT2K4 now (Onslaught is sweet) but there are supposedly already cheats for it too. :|

I used to be a huge CS junkie, but stopped once the servers started getting sh!tty and cheaters became even more rampant and obvious. Now I just play sports games on my xbox

I dont like UT2K4's ADHD style of playing, I like a slower paced game, thats not all reflexes and deals with more stragery.

Quake 2 DM
Quake 2 CTF
Quake 2 Jailbreak!!
Gloom (Quake 2 Mod)
Counter-Strike
Quake 3 DM / Rocket Arena 3
Day of Defeat
Natural Selection
BF1942 Desert Combat Mod

here are the following online fps that i played and enjoyed ALOT!

CS was just fun using real guns for a change... It was nicely balance.. well until the entire team buys a awp or something. I really hated the changes CS has gone through over the years but its still enjoyable once in awhile.

Desert Combat... well i just love riding the jeeps/tanks :) lol

Yeah, people do drugs for the same reason. Plus games are cheaper. I've never found a downloadable drug.

Call of Duty - Havent played yet.

Counter-Strike - I've played that game from the beginning. I just uninstall it the other day. It started getting real old.
It was fun in the betas. I liked hanging out in the same server and chatting with the same people though.

BF1942 - I finished the game pretty quick. It was alright. The Desert Combat mod though is awesome. I love flying the bombers and driving the tanks. Mad fun. If I could only learn the fly the helicopters.

Everyone has different opinions, your just happen to be wrong :)

I'm playing Vietnam right now.. I like it because its realistic. I don't like UT2004 style games anymore, I find the true war games to be fun.

Well, given the amount of AI on your screen at a single given moment in Call Of Duty, it makes for a very unique ww2 game (unlike MOH where its you vs. the entire German army at Bastogne).

You cannot fully enjoy counter-strike if you're a nub (I assume many of you are). League play is where its all at. Many of the nubbie pubbies (people that play in public servers) are often very quick to jump to the gun on who's hacking or whatnot. I've been banned from several servers because some admin thinks his hack detecting judgement comes directly from God. Go play in Cal Main or better, then you'll realize the complexity of CS :).

For Bf1942/Vietnam, blowing up stuff with vehicles online is fun! The maps are huge and you have a 64 player max. The very fortunate few who have uber computers will be able to fully enjoy this game.
