Why do you DC? Me, I find it to be a useful justification of my machine when I am not actively using it. And I'm rather proud that I have a single machine that pulls the numbers that I have.

OK I just love the stats, the rankings, always trying to move up! To have all these cpus just sitting here doin nothing just won't be right! The science is a big bonus in all this crazyness. 😀

With only two rigs at my disposal if it wasn't for the science I won't bother with DC at all. But let it not be said that I'm not a stats and milestones junkie too. 😀

Well, it started with the stats, and continues to be largely stat driven, if only because that is the only tangible evidence that we're doing anything 😛
I do get a strange sort of personal satisfaction and general "warm fuzzy" feeling regarding crunching, though. Add to that the slew of medical issues that our son has that we've been dealing with over the past couple of years, and there's always that hope that maybe, just maybe, one of my rigs, one of my TeAm-mates' rigs, or even someone unknown halfway around the world might stumble upon something that leads to a cure, new drug, or at least insight into the causes of certain diseases and ailments.

Just because I can. Started with Seti @ Home back when I was in charge of our building's computers at a previous job. I installed the classic version on probably 100+ computer and just let them fly.
Currently I do Rosetta and have it on the 5 walk-up computers in our building since they sit unused most of the day anyway. Figure might as well have them doing something useful. Plus I like to be up in the rankings beacuse it's fun.
And the reason I do Rosetta is I feel it might actually serve a purpose. I'd rather find a cure for cancer or AIDs or something like that than find some random radio wave that might be an alien who wouldn't care about our planet anyway. I wish everyone would do things like Rosetta since they could actually have a great medical affect that would benefit the entire planet.

Yeah, Spacehead does a great job with stats for us SB crunchers. I have to say that I run my computer overclocked 24/7 crunching SB to see high numbers on the daily stats page. I guess I think of it as a kind of 24/7 CPU benchmark. I've only recently gotten into overclocking, and I love to push my CPUs to their limits. I tweak whatever processor I have at the time (I buy, sell, and trade often, so I've used three different AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice) processors and one AMD Opteron 144 processor) to get every ounce of processing power possible, then running SeventeenorBust, and see a jump in production. It's like a self-fufilling prophecy... don't ya just love those?
Honestly, I don't really care too much about primes or the Sierpinski conjecture (i.e. the focus of SB). In all honesty, I probably should've started F@H, since I actually have interest in that project; however, Spacehead does such a good job and I've already been crunching SB for a few months. I guess it's just resistance to change.
BTW, the TeAm has retaken #3 in the SB rankings very recently! Check it out here!

Couldn't say it better myself. I S@H, but I might add one of the medical ones to my BOINCing.
BtW: At uni there are a few thousand P4's left on 24/7 doing nothing but displaying the XP screen saver. Does anyone know of a uni or something that runs a DC project. Image the processing you could get done with that many CPU's (especially since all the new ones at Uni are dual-cores).

I leave my computers on 24/7 and I felt they were wasted when they were idle and not used. I used to be into the stats but I got out of that phase and just run the projects blindly anymore.
The GLORY and satisfaction of knowing that I'm (hopefully) making a contribution to the advancement of medical research, and being part of the best DC TeAm on the globe!
Oh yeah... and bringing up crunching Rosetta at parties causes all the women there to instantly lose interest in whoever they are with... absolute chick-magnet... bugs my wife a bit though!

Its all about the community for me.
I have met a lot of great people here on the forums. Some I have seen go through things I can only imagine. TeAm Enterprise's website is one example of great folks trying to make a difference for another very special person. Megan, we love you girl, and hopefully someday we will find that we actually made a difference, don't give up hope.
There are a great many folks here I consider friends, in this community there is no one I would consider an enemy. I have seen some give great amounts of time and energy to provide stats, I have seen many that make the time here well spent as they provide the distraction we all need from time to time, I have read great stories of whats coming down the road, or about the projects that I would never know otherwise, I get to celebrate with friends when they reach milestones I can only dream of.
I can come here and "hang out" and feel at home. I haven't had that feeling (belonging) at any other website.
Stats are great, but only because I want to help the folks that always help me. And in the numbers I can see that on my own I wouldn't make but a drip in the ocean of results. When I see what a whole team can do ... I believe we have a chance to make a difference, a much better chance than I could ever do on my own.

4. using "old and outdated" computers and to show all that they do a lot more good than those "very latest" comps which are used for a few hours now and then ... (I do not protest those "very latest" comps which crunch a lot ...)

It is a natural extention of my indoor hobby... building PCs... saving $$ to upgrade PCs.... showing off the PCs I built. Followed (of course) by breaking my PCs with stupid experimenation..... now lather, rinse, repeat

Heh - when I'm planning a vacation I like to see if there's any members of the TeAm that I can visit along the way. 🙂 Heck, sometimes the vacation is secondary. 😀
