Why do you believe in God?

There are many things in this world that I cannot explain, things such as where the very first particles of matter came from and when/why they got there. I cannot define a legitimate purpose for life. I know we are here and I know it is in our nature to prolong the species. We have our consciousness, which I cannot understand how it works (our consciousness is more than the sum of all our neural connections).

I believe that everything in this world can be explained in a logical manor without attributing anything to a devine being. I can see everything we have learned and see no reason why the things we cannot yet explain, will not be explained as our collective knowledge increases. I see no basis to resort to needing a god to explain what we cannot at the moment.

For those who do believe in God, why do you believe?

It's all about faith in a higher being that cannot be explained through science IMO :)

Seems to me that it's mostly because it's taught to kids by their parents, so it's kinda ingrained in people at a young age.

I sometimes envy those that believe in God. Maybe if I could, some things wouldnt seem so bleak:(

I think Science may be quite simply incapable of certain things - like explaining how the universe started. Big bang? great, so what made that ball? I don't think science can ever properly identify the beginning of time, and so that is a shortcoming of it. If that is indeed a shortcoming, well you can't use it for everything, can you? I've no interest in getting into it, so I'll just say that ;)

Heh, my thoughts exactly. Sometimes it seems like it would be nice to have that comfort, but once you go atheist it is hard going back.

You put it best yourself. You believe that everything in this world can be explained in a logical manor. So you have placed your faith in theories of man.

I on the other hand have placed my faith in literature which I believe is from a higher being.

I know what you mean. It would be nice to think that there are answers to questions I don't understand, and give me some kind of ultimate purpose and comfort in knowing I will die someday.

In the example of death, thinking of God and heaven are peaceful. However, I do not believe in it. It does make things bleak.
