Why do you always run out of resourses about every 12 hours?

I run out of resourses after about 12 hours of regular use, my system specs are in my sig, and i got 256megs of RAM at the moment, before windows98 always crashed before i ran out of resourses but WinME is really stable and I havent had any crashes, but I do run out of resourses quickly which requires a restart. what can I do to free some up?

see if you got a trojan horse varation on board.

Something is eating up your machine's memory.. could be any thing (device driver) if its not a trojan horse.

some people call it memory leaking (technically incorrect).

specifically, it's programs that don't release the RAM properly (which means at all). you can blame the OS and poorly written programs for this.

I hoped WinME would have some sort of fix, but oh well.

you can go NT, i hear Win2k is much better at this (memory management). you can use some program to "fix" this problem. don't ask, i can't remember 🙁

Make sure you do not have V-cache set manually.
Go to system.ini, scroll down to vcache - make sure its blank underneath. You MUST let ME manage vcache.
Defrag drive swapfile is on, set min/max at 350MB
Set computer use as "server" in performance tab
downloads.com has a memory washer, do a search

The best way to deal with it..is to use FreeMem Pro. It is a great program which 100% flush memory when you're done with certain programs.

Some cheap a$s programmers never bother to add a function in their programming code that when you close a program..it suppose to automatically flush out of memory.

Question: Why do you always run out of resourses about every 12 hours?

Answer: Because you run Win9x.

Face it, it's good for gaming. But it requires a reboot every 3 hours (of heavy use), or it will slowly dwindle into slowness. If you want an OS with good memory management you're gonna hafta go NT/Win2k.

I use MemTurbo, does the trick for me. I liked the interface better than FreeMem, but both do the trick nicely. I would also disable some of your start up items and check for trojans.

i hate pretty much nothing on starup, my computer boots in under a min. I looked though win.ini and other system files and dont see any trojans on startup.

Might wanna check the registry also. Win98 has system information thing which saves time, but to do it manually, run regedit and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices,
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, and look for any unfamiliar programs.
I'm guessing these keys are the same in Win ME but I don't have it yet so I can't say for sure. BTW, I haven't read any reviews about ME yet...how is it?

The amount of system resources has nothing to do with how much RAM you have. Its a fixed amount of RAM, and programs aren't releasing their share of it, when they are done with it. Disable everything, and then re-enable everything you have one at a time until you find the program that is doing it. Once you have that, you can see if there is an update for it, or try to reinstall the problem program.

not sure what kinda system setup YOU have but I can run almost forever without problems....I run at least 10 apps at the time (IE, mirc, OE, SETI, ICQ, nukenabber, winamp, firewall, etc.), run games, etc., etc. and really don't have to reboot.

p3 750, 320 RAM, 80 Mb vcache, 400 Mb swap file, conservativeswapfileuseage = 1, win98SE

PS: "You MUST let ME manage vcache" ehhehe 😀
