Why do women generally write more neatly than men?

At lunch today this question came up and none of us had a logical answer. We all agreed it is generally true - women write more neatly than men.

In fact, the group agreed it was usually possible to tell if a woman or a man wrote something by the handwriting.

I don't know why either, it's bizarre. Some people say women are naturally neater, but I've known many (if not most) women who were real slobs who had perfect handwriting.

Evidence from any of the women I have ever lived with, and most I have known, would not support your theory.

Maybe it's the gentler touch. Sometimes when I write, I press so hard my hand cramps like anything. My handwriting looks terrible then. But when I try to write gently, it ends up neater.

Women are ingrained to put more worth into appearance. Men are more functionality oriented, if you can read it we don't care what it looks like.

Women work out their fingers more, so they develop better finger control.

Us men start out working the wrists...

That sure isn't true for sorority girls. Over the summer when some sorority girls live at our house, their bathroom is always disgusting. Their rooms don't look too much better either.

Not really. I know plenty of women that are neat but I do remember in college that some of the dirtiest dorm rooms and apartments were the ones inhabited by women. Young women are real neat about their appearance but not always about their surroundings. Older women tend to be neater. Even girls that were complete slobs as children or young adults amazingly become neat freaks when it is their own house....well some of them.

I know several women that are pigs. But it's all depending on your time frame.

In college, I've noticed that men tend to be a little cleaner. A nice room will keep a woman around longer than a dirty room. The women I hang around don't care that much about having THEIR place be clean. My ex-girlfriend was the most disgusting person on the planet. At the same time though, they all have neater handwriting than the men.

Physically women look neater in the sense that their bodies are more attractive (biased opinion from me), but would this have anything to do with handwriting?

I believe some women just care more about their handwriting, but I can't think of a good reason.

I think that's all there is to it. Just about anyone can write nicely if they take the time and be careful about it. But most guys tend to scrawl along at top speed, not taking the time to be neat about it.

As a kid did you give a damn about how your writing looked? Probably not. But girls, they were always writing something, somewhere. Might as well have it look nice. Practice makes perfect.
