Why do weathermen SSUUCCKK???

No Lifer
well i was HOPING to wake up today to maybe some snow and maybe not have to go to work, because all last night the weather men were saying "oh it's going to start snowing no later than sunrise, we're going to expect atleast 10" of snow tomorrow. it's going to be the biggest snow storm of the season."

then i wake up this morning. no snow on the ground whatsoever. schools are already cancelled for kids. UNIVERSITIES ARE ALREADY CLOSED! (this never happened when i was in college!) Now the weather men say we will get anywhere from 3-6 inches, not nearly as big as they expected. it is 9:15 now and STILL no snow at all!

seems when i was in HS the weather men were on point. what they predicted would happen. then when i hit college, they started to get even less accurate, and my senior year (03-04) they were just awful with predictions. now this stuff happens, and the "blizzard conditions" are now nothing but "another possible snow storm" 12 hours later.

has anyone else noticed that weathermen now a days can't predict crap? i'm in the DC Metro area btw.

I saw this post and knew you had to live in the DC Metro area.

EDIT: This is before I got to the part you said you're in the DC Metro area 😀

Which part of Silver Spring are you in? I just moved up here from Alexandria. Dropped my commute time to work from 1.5 hours to ~15 minutes.

Yeah man, I'm in philly and I don't see a flake in the sky. My friend was telling me 1-2 feet, and of course it doesnt happen because the weather bullsh*t entirely too much these days.

It's a local thing here. Topper wets his pants whenever WUSA goes into their full bore snow panic coverage. Weather here is pretty boring for the most part so snow is really the only thing they have to get all tingly about.

im in silver spring, RIGHT off the GA Avenue 495 exit. i drive to columbia to work every day, the opposite way of traffic 🙂. i hit no traffic on the way to work, and usually none on the way home, while the other side is like a parking lot heh.

Because they hold one of the most useless professions ever. They let computers do all the work, then report thoes findings to you.

If you are speaking of just TV ones I agree. The real ones that work for NOAA do a bit more than that.

We should take a lesson from the Russians:

"Al Roker and Mr. G., take note ? weathermen in Moscow have been told by the government they face heavy fines if they get the forecast wrong.

"[They] will be held responsible for financial losses the city incurs through their incorrect prognoses," said Mayor Juri Luschkov.

The policy was announced after one forecaster predicted warm weather ? and the mercury plunged to minus 33. "

DC weathermen have sucked since I lived here. Remember that huge snowstorm we had year before last? I ended up with 14" and the initial prediction was 2-4". They just kept raising the estimate hour by hour.

If they do get the temperatures right, they get the wind wrong, or the precipitation wrong, or something. I wish I could get paid for doing my job with a Ouija board.

That's true. Though they are still "predicting" weather based on historical data and a computer crunching numbers. They can get a radar reading that shows the direction the front and the air masses are flowing and then predict the path and type of weather that is going to take place.

The vast majority of the "work" still falls on the shoulders of technology.

man i hear ya. i go to umbc. ALL the other colleges are cancelled. Except us. i am waiting until they cancel later and have a shitload of students stranded. Greate policy.

I live in columbia and work part time in silve spring. Right across from Discovery Communications building.

They've been promising me snow here in Colorado for a week. 🙁

As for weathermen sucking, I don't know about weatherMEN, but some weatherHOTTIES can suck all they want.

😀

last thursday was a huge surprise to find UMD closed. And now today... I woke up, grabbed my phone and called to check... boom, don't have to fight 270 🙂

They are wrong since the exact weather they predicted is ~20 miles north, south, west, or east of where you are. They just can't focus enough. On the grand scale of things (predicting the weather of the massive Earth), missing by just 20 miles is fantastic. However, if you are on that border it could mean the difference between a sunny 40°F day or a cold day with 10" of snow.

I think the difference is that the weathermen dole out the weather now as if they'll have to defend themselves in court.
Lawyer: "So, Mr. Weather, did you have sufficient information to calculate that we'd have 6.5 inches of snow rather than 6 inches of snow?"
Mr. Weather: "Um, well, yeah, but it's an imperfect science. Sometimes you have to go with your gut."
Lawyer: "So you'd like the court to believe that the lives of 29 children were lost today in a fiery school bus crash because your stomach speaks to you? Is that not correct, or is it?".
Mr. Weather: "Um, well, no, errr I mean, yes, umm, can you repeat the question?"

Fvckin lawyers. 😀
P.S. I can blame anything on lawyers and often do.

The real problem is incorporating "yellow journalism" into the weather report. At the end of the day they are trying to sex up the newscast as much as possible to attract the most viewers.

What ends up happening is that the meteorologists have many different projected paths based on all sorts of possible scenarios. And instead of giving us the average case, they give us the worst case.

I would blame the ratings-grubbing executives before I blame the lowly meteorologists.

Oh and there's always the possibility that the dairy farmers' lobby is greasing their wheels 🙂

I also think that networks should be fined for doing this.

The fact of the matter is that our weather models still aren't accurate enough to predict an exact amount of snow. It'll probably be another 50 years IMO.

I don't know....I'm just glad they continuously help thin the gerbil populations...that's about all weathermen are good for.
