Why do weak people always turn to God?

Doesn't anyone have any backbone anymore? It just seems that when faced with a problem; rent is due, drug addiction, marital problems...many people turn to "God" to help them solve all their problems.

Why doesn't the average Joe see that "God" is just an imaginary CRUTCH? If you want to quit drinking, only YOU CAN MAKE YOU QUIT DRINKING. If you want to stop beating your dog, ONLY YOU CAN MAKE YOU STOP BEATING THE DOG.

God won't save your marriage, pay the bills or wash your car. God also WILL NOT "give you the strength" to do any of the above.

If you're a weak person, admit you're weak and learn to be strong on your own. Leave The Good Book where it belongs; gathering dust in a seedy motel nightstand drawer.

I shouldn't have said what I said. I am an atheist, and I wasn't being very respectful to theist.

Long before man "learned to rely on himself" he looked to God for aid. I don't see where the modern self-reliant man is better off than his forebears.

God is the only way that humans can stand. He is the reason we are here, and he is the force that helps us in tough times.

God doesn't exist, we can't be weak, we must learn to do things on our own. We are all we have.

Does that about cover it, or were you looking for some personal attacks?

I am weak and frail, but in that weakness I find my strength. Accepting weakness means admitting my inability to control certain aspects of my life, and admitting that sometimes I get scared and anxious about the future and about my fate. Then I cry a little, drink a beer, go for a run, or sleep. Then I wake up and face the day and my troubles. There's no other way I can do it. The process of admitting weakness and crying out to God when I was Christian garnered me the same results that I receive now from crying out to my own soul.

Some people find great peace in being self-sufficient. If that's not for you STFU and leave us alone. You don't need to talk about it.

Sounds great the other way too, doesn't it. :)

MichaelD, if only you knew how much God has affected my life...

just because you have totally shut him out of your life does not mean he doesn't exist....

Really god is a bunch of crap. There is no god, and people need to wake up and see that.

must resist calling you an idiot.....

Then you're no better than MichaelD himself...

why is that? I'm an idiot for calling someone else an idiot who makes a very strong claim as if it's fact without any sort of reasoning behind it? oh yes..i see the logic here....

/breaks out protest signs, megaphone and extra batteries

The great thing about the good old USA is that we are all free to express our thoughts. I don't look down on the guy that worships trees...that's his bag. I worship nothing and nobody/nothing. I fly my own course.

many people have a psychological need to create something like gods and religions (hence why there are 1000s, all mostly forgotten) so they can use it for their own purposes.
