Why do we use the expression, "Jesus Christ" or "Oh my God" ?

Did somebody just randomly use his name when they were pissed off, scared or surprised?

I'd assume because it's blasphemy to say it, which of course is incentive for people to say it.

I highly doubt it was random. I'd bet it was someone showing off that they didn't care if they broke the 10 commandments, and that it just simply grew from there.

Why is fvck you so offensive? Why are "bad" words bad, when 50 years ago they probably didn't even exist? I certainly doubt you'll get a question to any of those questions because it's just so vague.

freudian slip.. crying out to a higher being unconsciously because they're internally aware that everything is not under their control...

This one isn't vauge. Sheesh, the Jews *forgot* the name of God (Yaweh or something like that is the best guess we have now) because it was blasphemey to say it. It was a part of the 10 commandments not to use the name of the Lord in vain. Why do people do it? The same reason they commit adultery and murder and everything else. Either they don't believe in it, or they just think it's stupid and don't follow it.

It was simply a way to rebel against something they believed once, that has grown now into useage in modern society. Cursing at God when you're unhappy about something.

It originally came from people praying. Probably in medieval times and so on, on the battlefield.

Guy comes up to you with morning-star
"Jesus Christ, protect me!"
You kick guy with morning-star in the balls, take his weapon
"Oh my god, give me strength!"

We've just shortened it because we're lazy.

The word f*ck dates back to at least 1500.

Taking the Lord's name (or any god, depending on the individual's religion) in vain dates back at least 3,000 years, and probably further.

2 things I know firmly about this world:
- No one is in complete control.
- No one really knows what is going on.

Not to mention sexually excited: "Oh God! Oh yes! Oh Jesus! Oh God! Ohh..."

Kind of interesting given the Church's general inability to deal with the subject of sexuality.

The Jews did not forget the name Yahweh. The clergy decided that since the average man didn't always know why uses of the name would be blasphemous that they would ban use of the word altogether. Basically to protect you from yourself. If one never said Yahweh then one could never take the name in vain (or is it vane? I forget.) They clergy, however, passed the name down through the ranks and kept it alive. It is also still written in ancient texts.

The reason you see so many "The Lord, our God"s in the old testiment, etc. isn't because people thought it sounded good, or pious. It was because the original texts read "Yahweh, our God" or "Our Lord, Yahway". They weren't allowed to modify meaning texts so they simply changed all references to Yahweh to something like the above.

yip F*ck is a very old word. I researched it a few years go along with other "bad" words, one of the most interesting research papers that i have done.

I believe people use it because they want to compound their disbelief that God or Jesus exists. It might the feel better to blame someone or something that has no direct way to influence their actions.

I have been trying to stop swearing all together since Jesus Christ has saved me, but I going on twelve years I still use certain words when I am injured or angered by something or someone.

But at least God forgives me when I ask him. :)

People use it because the culture has defined that those words contain power. If I want to show that I am _extremely_ suprised / excited / pissed off, I will use a powerful word to pretense that emotion.

I highly doubt any person says oh my god simply because they want to conciously defy a god. But because growing up, they knew those words were the ones that pushed the most buttons and thus got labeled as the strongest words to use.
