Why do we turn into cowards when we deal with China?

The other day the Bush administration accused Iraq, North Korea, Libya, Syria, Iran, and Sudan of having germ warfare programs, but they failed to mention China (although I did hear on MSNBC that some officials wanted to add China to the list). China is openly hostile to the U.S. (i.e. the deplorable September 11th tapes that the Chinese government produced) and yet we seem to let everything slide.

See the great thing about "hating" china is we feel no remorse about using their people as slave labor. If we had mexicans assemble our nike shoes for 2 cents a week we'd all feel bad, but since the chinese do it and we don't like them- its ok.

The Soviet Union had a larger nuclear arsenal than we had, and we didn't act like pussies with them.

Bingo, I hate the fact that we deal with a government that has the worst human rights record in the world today. They wield the propaganda machine like no other, remember the whole spy plane situation? It was our fricken plane, turn it over and the crew in a TIMELY manner, geezus...

And also it's only a matter of time before the Commies get enough balls to invade Taiwan, which the U.S. will NOT back down and the sh1t really hits the fan...

China poses no military threat to the US. Aside from the whole little matter of mutual destruction with nuclear weapons, China cannot threaten the US mainland; hell, China can't even invade Taiwan... their airforce is insufficient and they don't have the sealift capacity, among other things. The US economy would be horribly shaken if trade stopped between China and the US, though, and this is why the US doesn't want to rock the boat.

Because many of Bush's corporate bosses plan on building over there.

Mexicans are starting to make too much money (some are making $20+ a day now!!) and their government is becoming less corrupt. Both are turnoffs to American corporations.

<< China poses no military threat to the US. >>

Waging a conflict against China is not like fighting the Taliban. China is a HUGE nation and is becoming more and more militarily equipped. They might not start a conflict today, but they are becoming more capable every year. If a conflict broke out, U.S. allies in the region would be the ones to get hit (Japan, North Korea, Taiwan), but I don't think China would do that unprovoked. Like I said, they have a great propaganda machine, they can make their nation seemed threatened by little Taiwan and convince it's people to launch a full scale attack. Remember when Taiwan's PM talked about changing the One China Policy? China sent in warships to run excercises in the Taiwan Strait, which is only 40 miles seperating the mainland from Taiwan, to rally public support against Taiwan. Atleast Clinton sent a carrier force into the area to tell China to step the fvck down, you made your point, get the hell outta here...

Maybe you should quote my entire reply next time. Do you think a Chinese invasion of Taiwan in feasible? A Chinese invasion of Japan? A Chinese invasion of South Korea?

Why create frictions when money is to be made? China is not about to take over the world, so calm down!

The tape thing you mentioned, that's just commie government propaganda. We are guilty of it also, no big deal.

In the end the reason why China backed down on the spy plane incident and why we allowed China to join the WTO all comes down to money, money and more money!!

Not starting a flame war, just to let you know before hand man ;)

But if a conflict broke out with the U.S., nothing is preventing China from launching attacks on these U.S. allies. Maybe not necessarily an invasion (that is well out of their capability at the moment), but just to damage American spheres of influence in the region. China is always complaining about the U.S. intervening and gaining power in that region of the world, always stealing China's stance as the key power in the region.

Right, attacks are possible, but to what effect? I doubt China could dish out more damage than it would take against any of the nations you mentioned. It's just not a good deal for China to do anything militarily in the near future, and they don't need to... US investors are pouring money into China. Too bad for them when China becomes stronger and must no longer maintain such nice relations!

Oh, I agree China wouldn't do that in the near future. Definitely after being allowed into the WTO and winning the bidding war to be host to the Olympics, military conflict would only ruin them and they know that. But if they wanted to start something they definitely have the option to become capable of it. I have relatives in Taiwan, so of course the last thing I want is China to be pissed off, but at the same time I don't think the U.S. should back down to China's demands. China, except for the capitalism, is opposite of everything the U.S. stands for.

<< Is cheap labor more important than national security? >>

Hell no, but the U.S. can only apply pressure using the U.N. and economic terms. Unfortunately the all mighty buck prevailed...

Hopefully their WTO membership will make them tow the line. They fought for it for such a long time.

It's easy to beat your own people up, but start jumping on other trade partners? That brings down the organization. Can't conduct business if there's no customers left.

So provoking China make us here in the states more secure? Where is the logic in that?

China's eventually going to transform itself towards capitalism. Look at their leadership, all those old farts are eventually going to die out, so their proproganda can't last forever. Good trade relations is a positive thing, it can help improve their education system, and the more the ordinary people are better educated, they'll see that communism isn't the solution.
