why do we tip bartenders?

we don't tip the guys at quiznos, or take out places, or fast food.
why do we tip someone for pouring jd and coke into a glass?

yes, spawned off the other tip thread.

we tip them so we get treated better as we return and drink more and more.
If you frequent and stay at food places as much as people normally do bars (routine) and see the same employees, you should definitely tip. Most places of the sort have a tip jar, or offer the ability to tip. At food places you typically only see tipping if paying with credit. When picking up pizza and using credit I tip, and if there is a jar and I used cash I'll usually throw something in.
Otherwise, if tipping is important, ask. 🙂

B/c those other jobs are being paid at least minimum wage while the bartender is not.

This. Bartenders/waitresses are paid below minimum wage. Also, there's more expected of a bartender than someone at Quiznos or McD's. Bartenders (good ones) have quite a bit more knowledge/skill.

conjecture? or fact?

Conjecture.

Here's the fact: They ARE paid minimum wage.
Whether it's through your tips or their employer/bar owner is irrelevant.

Huh?

Because they are awesome. Get to know your bartenders. Biggest non-mistake I ever made.

Yeah, but you were a shitty tipper! 🙂

<edit>
Could I not warp at least once in this thread? 🙁

Where I live employers are required by law to compensate for wages up to minimum wage if tips do not cover it. So that bs excuse doesnt fly.

Everywhere in the USA the employer is required to cover it so it doesn't fly anywhere here.

I know for a fact that this does not occur everywhere. Employers have found ways around it, legal or not. And like it or not, calling up the state/federal government to complain is not always the easiest way to get a solution. Regardless, even a bartender making minimum wage deserves a tip, that's just the way it is.

because the first glass may be 30% JD to 70% Coke..
if you tip, the second glass will be 50% JD to 50% Coke.
if you tip again, the third glass will be 70% JD to 30% Coke.

if you don't tip, the second glass will be 20% JD to 80% Coke.

see where i'm going?

Bars are tricky. You have a handful of drinks and you're in a good mood. The waitress (or drink girl, or whatever they're called) is usually attractive and very nice to you. You can't help but tip at the end of the night.

Why do we tip anyone? Why does a waiter get 20% of my bill? Why doesn't he just get $5 or something regardless of what I order? If I get a $50 steak instead of a $10 salad, WHY DOES HE GET MORE MONEY?

Anyways, tipping doesn't make any sense. But not doing it out of "principle" is not an option because then you're a cheap bastard.
