In fairness to Israel regarding the USS liberty attack, there is a great deal of US guilt in not letting Israel know that the USS Liberty was a US flagged ship. And in fact the USA had told Israel that it had no naval assets in the area. As for the Israeli pilots, their training was rather poor.

But still, I think we all can agree that NO Nation has a right to attack ships in international waters, no matter what national flag it carries. And in fact the USS liberty, when attacked was 25 miles or double the 12 miles of Egyptian international waters to the West of Sinai. Which still put the USS Liberty well away from being any offensive threat to the then 1948 borders of Israel.

But at the end of the day, Israel paid extensive reparation to the USA for bombing the USS liberty, both the USA and Israel now regard the incident as a closed issue, so its difficult to make an issue of it today.

Maybe more relevant today is the Israeli boarding of a Turkish ship in international waters that resulted in the death of 9 crew members. And may well cost Israel the loss of a Turkish ally and future international support.

As recently as a few days ago, much of the damage to Israeli damage could be mitigated by an apology from the Israeli government, but Israel refuses to even do that.

So we can only somewhat assume, Israel has learned nothing and future USS Liberty type incidents will continue to occur to all kinds of vessels in international waters.
