Why do we still have Pennies?

I really don't like pennies. I never do anything with them (use my debit card most of the time). I had a college professor back in '99 who thought that pennies should go away. In fact, he admitted to throwing them away. Too much of a nuisance.

What say you ATOT? Anyone else throw away their worthless coins?

I save all money, but I'd like to see them stop minting anything less than a quarter. Fun fact, $1 2015 is worth 10¢ 1950.

Always throw them in a jar somewhere, when the jar is full turn them into the bank. It does add up

I throw them on the ground or leave them in the coin thing at the grocery.

Truth be told....My wife doesn't like her pennies touching her silver coins. Drives her nuts.

It adds up to $5. How much time did you spend getting that $5?

Why would it be about how much time? You pour your change into a jar, when it's full turn it in. If you can't understand that, you must have been rich at a young age. I'm frugal, but it's not like it takes effort. Granted, I pour all change in jars, so it doesn't take as long as you might think..sometimes once a year I turn it in..get $70-100

I spend it as I get it. I'm not gonna pay to drive scrap metal around town, or pay someone to count it for me.

I've spent a lifetime trying to earn pennies. The more pennies I have in my savings account and IRA the better off I am.

I've heard rumours that the US keeps the penny as a subsidy to the zinc industry.

Canada got rid of the penny a couple years ago. I certainly don't miss them. Still have jars of them though.

I save pure copper pennies. The new ones are shit. As shoddy and cheap as they are, they still cost more to mint than they're worth.

Indeed, a revalution is long overdue. In the good old days, one could own a man for less then twenty pounds. Whereas nowadays the inflation has made men uppity and value themselves too greatly. Poppycock, I say!

They got rid of them here, makes a lot of sense. (no pun intended)

In fact I say get rid of everything below a quarter, and change the tax system so that taxes and any other charges have to be part of the advertised price for whatever product or service you are buying, but broken down on receipt. Now everyone can charge for stuff in quarter increments and the person actually pays that amount, rather than have to pay some oddball number. Everything would be rounded to quarters. It would make everyone's life easier when dealing with cash transactions. Cashiers, and consumers.

I also save all my coinage in a huge jar. Once a year I take it to the credit union and dump them into the automatic counter and it gets deposited in my account. Usually about 100 to 200 dollars. I also pick up pennies.

damn Euros still have single cents.
Nobody wants those and machines don't accept them.

But the automated cashiers spit them out.

I also hate the 5 cents of franc.

I think that below the unit, only 25 cents should exist anymore.
This way you don't have to read the numbers on the small coins.

It's too big for buying single candies but they can just sell a minimum of two and the problem is solved.

yeah I don't know how north americans can not hate having prices being not the real price.
Also germans with their Pfand create confusion.
